SPARTANBURG, S.C. (June 30, 2026) – The new BMW X5 writes another chapter in its trailblazing story. The fifth generation impresses with technical innovations, a striking new design, and the integration of forward-looking technologies from the Neue Klasse. This underscores its exceptional status and reinforces its leading position in a segment it originally created.

First model from the brand to offer five different drive system types
As the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) from BMW and the founding father of the brand’s hugely successful X family, the trendsetting BMW X5 has been shaping the future in innovative style ever since its introduction in 1999. True to that legacy, the new BMW X5 becomes the first BMW model to launch with a choice of five distinct drive systems.

Alongside petrol and diesel combustion variants, including 48V mild hybrid technology, and plug-in hybrid models, the fifth generation also introduces the brand’s first all-electric model, the BMW iX5. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen will follow at a later stage as BMW’s first hydrogen-powered production vehicle. Its powertrain comprises the fuel cell system, in-car hydrogen storage using the new BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage technology, and an innovative high-voltage battery. The third generation of the fuel cell system allows for a particularly compact, high-performance, and efficient drive system with a range of up to 750 kilometers (466 miles)[1].

The new BMW iX5, the first battery-electric BMW X5, debuts with the sixth generation of BMW’s eDrive technology, delivering ranges of up to 845 kilometers (525 miles) in the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, along with fast charging, 800V technology, and practical bidirectional charging capability. This is made possible by new cylindrical cells measuring 120 millimeters in height, used in the high-voltage battery for the first time in the new BMW iX5.

New design: an unmistakable presence from every angle
The new BMW X5 also takes a major step forward in design. From every angle, its clean, monolithic, and powerful silhouette conveys the confident presence that reinforces its leading position in the segment, making it one of the defining faces of the brand. This comes largely from the seamless fusion of classic SAV proportions with the forward-looking design language of the Neue Klasse, resulting in a harmonious and distinctive whole.

The next generation of the X family’s signature exterior is defined by the upright front end, the vertically aligned BMW kidney grille with Iconic Glow, and the new “double-X” light signature, appearing on a BMW for the first time. The clean, structured side profile is especially striking thanks to the innovative door handles, dubbed BMW Winglets, which pair progressive design with everyday convenience: recessed handles need only the lightest touch to open the power-operated doors.

Naturally, every model offers broad scope for personalization, including eleven exterior paint colors and a carefully curated wheel lineup that now tops out at 23-inch rims. The new BMW X5 M60e xDrive adds visual highlights befitting its role as the sporting flagship, while the M Sport package and M Sport package Pro bring their own distinctive touches.

Optional extras include Adaptive Chassis Control, as well as Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with roll stabilization, now available from launch on every all-electric and plug-in hybrid model. Production and premiere in Spartanburg
The first variants of the new BMW X5 are set to launch in late November 2026, with all-electric and plug-in hybrid versions following in early 2027. Production will ramp up several months earlier, with BMW Group Plant Spartanburg (USA) beginning series production of the fifth-generation X5 in August 2026.

Plant Spartanburg has built the X5 since it launched the segment back in 1999, and now the facility marks another milestone: the new BMW iX5 will be the first all-electric vehicle built there. A new factory for the sixth-generation high-voltage batteries powering this model, built adjacent to Plant Spartanburg, runs without fossil fuels in normal operation, one of many ways the BMW Group is working to minimize CO2e emissions in production.
