IN THE NEWS: Mercedes-Benz Introduces Breathtaking S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupé

2015-S63-AMG-4MATIC-Coupe-05

March 19, 2014 – Affalterbach — The new S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest dream car to augment the Mercedes-AMG model range. Exciting lines underpin this twodoor model’s design. Power and sensual purity combine to give the vehicle irresistible presence and breathtaking performance. Equally impressive is the combination of outstanding driving dynamics, advanced lightweight construction and groundbreaking efficiency. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine is a paragon of poise and assurance. Boasting an output of 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, the S63 AMG Coupe delivers exceptional performance with remarkably low fuel consumption. In addition, performance- oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive (33/67% split) will come standard in the U.S. market for optimum traction in any driving situation.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The new S63 AMG Coupe is another exciting AMG dream car in the luxury segment. Now the S-Class Coupe also comes with performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive – as we rigorously pursue our all-wheel-drive initiative. Mercedes-AMG is putting the pedal to the metal again in the new year. Our model initiative is set to continue at blistering pace in 2014.”

Up to 140 pounds lighter thanks to AMG Lightweight Performance

The S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest model to benefit from the systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy. Lightweight construction has reduced the vehicle weight by up to 140 pounds – even though the car has a higher output and more extensive standard equipment than the preceding model. This weight savings was achieved largely thanks to the use of a lightweight lithium-ion battery, optional AMG forged light-alloy wheels and a weight-optimized AMG high-performance composite braking system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin and the front end of the body are made of aluminium. The reduced weight improves driving dynamics and cuts fuel consumption, while the low power-to-weight ratio results in impressive performance: the S63 AMG Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 3.9 seconds and goes on to reach a top speed of 186 mph (electronically limited).

In terms of maximum output, torque and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains one of the most efficient series-produced V8 engines of all. With an output of 577 hp and 664 ft-lb of torque, the AMG eightcylinder unit meets even the most demanding of requirements. Compared to the previous CL63 AMG model, engine output has been increased by 41 hp and torque by 74 lb-ft. Yet the S63 AMG Coupe still consumes less fuel.

Individuality: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sport transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sport transmission combines perfectly with the V8 biturbo engine. Maximum agility and exciting dynamics are the two key strengths of this transmission, which is used exclusively at AMG. Drivers can configure their own personal set-up, depending on their driving style. There are three modes to choose from: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual). The ECO start/stop function is fitted as standard.

AMG sport exhaust system with automatic exhaust flaps

Emotional and sporty performance or restrained and relaxing cruising: the S63 AMG Coupe even has a choice of bespoke sounds. The AMG sport exhaust system meets individual driver requirements as it has automatic logic-controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine’s sound is more understated. In “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and more spontaneously, especially if the driver prefers a dynamic driving style. The result is an even fuller, hallmark AMG emotive engine sound.

“One man, one engine”: a tradition of hand-built excellence

Like all AMG V8 and V12 engines, the eight-cylinder biturbo engine for the S63 AMG Coupe is assembled by hand at the AMG engine shop in Affalterbach. Highly qualified engine fitters assemble the engines in Affalterbach according to the strictest quality standards based on the “one man, one engine” philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine plate bearing the engine technician’s signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz high-performance brand.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

For the first time, the S63 AMG Coupe comes standard in the U.S. market with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. With permanent all-wheel drive, 33 percent of the engine torque is sent to the front axle and 67 percent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. The all-wheel drive also enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces when equipped with winter tires**. Optimum traction is guaranteed by a multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 37 lb-ft, which maximizes the frictional connection potential of all four wheels.

**all S63 AMG Coupe and Sedan models come equipped with standard summer performance tires.

AIRMATIC air suspension

The S63 AMG Coupe 4MATIC features the full air-suspension system AIRMATIC with the adaptive damping system ADS PLUS. Specific front axle kinematics – including higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have been developed exclusively for the S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe. These measures enhance the vehicle’s agility for performance driving.

Systematic lightweight construction: Available AMG forged wheels

The S63 AMG Coupe is available with optional AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while at the same time increasing strength. The lower unsprung masses result in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response.

Optional wheels include 10-spoke forged wheels painted in titanium grey with a polished finish – 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the rear, with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires respectively. The forged wheels feature a high-quality, screwable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged aluminium. Its shape is reminiscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG logo is integrated into one of the ten spokes. These forged wheels are also available painted in matte black with a high-sheen rim flange.

AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system as an option for the first time

Short stopping distances and rapid deceleration are a given for the S63 AMG Coupe, which is equipped with a weight-optimized, fade-resistant AMG highperformance composite brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is available as an option. This design, which is more than 20 percent lighter, ensures lower unsprung masses and enhanced braking performance.

Design: AMG combines sensual purity with breaktaking performance

The S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe also boasts exciting looks to emphasize its sporty performance: it exudes power and hallmark Mercedes-Benz sensual purity. The design is a stage for the exciting technology at the heart of the new dream car. Numerous aerodynamic elements underline the outstanding driving dynamics: the front end is dominated by the three-dimensional AMG “twin-blade” radiator grille in silver shadow (a matte silver finish). Whether in motion or stationary, distinctive AMG lettering between the twin-blade lamellas leaves no doubt: this is a high-performance model from Affalterbach. The A-wing is located below the radiator grille. This three-dimensional air-ducting element is painted in the body color, spans the entire width of the front apron and displays the stylized “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles. Large, black flics surround the outer cooling air intakes. Down below, the front splitter in silver shadow optimizes the flow of air to the cooling modules. This design feature, which is a familiar sight in motorsport, also reduces front-axle lift and enhances the vehicle’s aerodynamic balance.

All of the cooling air grilles exude high quality with their high-gloss-black paint finish. Keeping the A-wing and front splitter separate makes the car appear closer to the road. A similar effect is created by the AMG side sill panels with their high-quality, three-dimensional inserts in silver shadow. Together with the lower feature line, these inserts make the S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe exude energy even when it is at a standstill. Further eye-catching features of the side design include the large AMG designed wheels. “V8 BITURBO” lettering in a new, contemporary typography on the front wings is another hallmark AMG design touch.

At the rear, the diffuser insert in high-gloss black also catches the eye right away. The lower trim element in silver shadow is reminiscent of the A-wing at the front and provides an effective contrast. The two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sport exhaust system with sport flaps are perfectly integrated into the diffuser insert. Stylized, vertical air outlets in the rear apron assume the role of a defined spoiler lip and optimize aerodynamics. The “S 63 AMG” model designation in a new, contemporary typography below the tail lamps adds the perfect finishing touch to the rear-end design.

Interior: Captivating luxury, quality and exclusivity

Opening the door reveals the luxurious interior of the S63 AMG Coupe: the instrument panel almost seamlessly transitions into the doors in a wraparound design. High-quality materials and fine workmanship are combined with a sporty and exclusive design idiom. The newly developed AMG sport seats with power adjustment, memory function and seat heating/ventilation offer the driver and front passenger optimum lateral support. Fine AMG design Nappa leather with piping together with AMG badges on all four seat backrests and an embossed AMG emblem on the armrest of the front center console create an exquisite atmosphere.

The new three-spoke AMG sport steering wheel with its distinctively contoured rim and perforated leather in the grip area allows perfect vehicle control. There is an AMG logo in the lower metal insert, and new aluminium shift paddles shorten the reaction time when changing gears to enhance performance. Another feature displaying the hallmark AMG look is the high-resolution TFT color AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials. In addition to the specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the AMG start-up display, the AMG logo in the speedometer 200 mph scale (left) and the “V8 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter (right).

The new, innovative touchpad, included as standard equipment, makes it significantly easier to operate the radio, telephone and navigation system. The safety and assistance systems are the same as those for the S550 4MATIC Coupe.

Even more exclusivity: the S63 AMG Coupe “Edition 1”

One particularly exclusive model in the range is the S63 AMG Coupe “Edition 1. The expressive arrangement of exclusive exterior and interior details arouses pure fascination. The irresistible look of the exterior is created from designo Magno Alanite Grey matte finish paint and Swarovski crystals in the LED highperformance headlamps. The exquisite ambience of the interior includes AMG sport seats upholstered in designo Exclusive Nappa Leather in bengal red/black with contrasting topstitching and piping. In keeping with this color scheme, the upper section of the dashboard, the front and rear center armrests, and the door linings are trimmed in nappa leather with contrasting topstitching, while the headliner is in finished in DINAMICA. The Edition 1 features a high level of equipment including the AMG Ceramic Braking System.

World premiere and market launch in 2014

The S63 AMG Coupe will celebrate its world premiere at the New York International Auto Show in April 2014. The United States market launch of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe 4MATIC will be in Fall 2014.

IN THE NEWS: Porsche Adds Performance to Boxster and Cayman with GTS Models

Cayman GTS _5_

Atlanta. For the first time, the Porsche Boxster and Porsche Cayman will be offered as GTS models. As is typical for Porsche, these models feature more powerful engines and additional standard performance equipment. The new Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS models are visually defined by more than just a badge: they offer as standard equipment unique front and rear fascias, blacked out Bi-XenonTM headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), 20-inch Carrera S wheels and a sport exhaust system with black tailpipes as standard. The Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS are built specifically for maximum driving pleasure.

The 3.4-liter 6-cylinder boxer engine of the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS models delivers an additional 15 hp compared to their “S” model counterparts. This means that the Boxster GTS has 330 hp and the Cayman GTS has 340 hp. Torque has been increased by 7 lb.-ft. in each model: 273 lb.-ft. in the Boxster GTS and 280 lb.-ft. in the Cayman GTS. The Sport Chrono package is now a standard feature with either the 6-speed manual or the optional 7-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission. This means with the optional PDK transmission and Sport Plus button activated, the Boxster GTS reaches 60 mph from a standstill in 4.4 seconds and 4.3 seconds in the Cayman GTS. Top track speed for the Boxster GTS is 174 mph with a manual transmission and 177 mph for a Cayman GTS equipped with a manual transmission.

The Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS feature Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard, which offers the choice of sportier or more comfortable ride settings at the press of a button. The 235/35 front and 265/35 rear tires on 20-inch Carrera S wheels provide the perfect setup for a balanced driving experience. Like other Porsche GTS models, the interior of the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS feature an Alcantara® wrapped steering wheel, headliner, center console, and inserts on the standard Sport Seats Plus. Additional visual elements include GTS nomenclature embroidered into the headrests and printed on the tachometer face.

A specific standard of performance and uniqueness is required to wear the GTS badge. For example, the legendary 1963 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS was dominant on the racetrack and a spectacle on the street. The 1980s and 1990s saw the 924 GTS and 928 GTS refine this characteristic. In 2007 the GTS emblem was reintroduced on the Cayenne GTS and later implemented in the 911 and Panamera model lines.

The Boxster GTS is priced from $73,500 and the Cayman GTS is priced from $75,200, excluding destination charges of $995. Both models will be available for delivery this summer.

PICK OF THE DAY: Proper Jaguar XJ6 Series III

00K0K_jCwaxPoIWNN_600x450

Perhaps one of the greatest testaments to any marque, any nameplate, is how long the car which represents it remains more or less unchanged; the Jeep C/Y/JK and Porsche 911, for example. Among sedan/saloon cars, the one that stands out is the Jaguar XJ. Since its introduction in 1968 to its modern day replacement (bearing the same name) in 2010, the XJ maintained its basic shape and much of the same characteristics as it did when it debuted. Timeless. To many, its zenith came in the Series III of the early- to mid-80s. With its Pininfarina styling queues, Bosch fuel injection and refinements like a sunroof as well as cruise control, the Series III became the quintessential Jag saloon. Despite the more sporting predecessors like the 3.8 MK2 or the more powerful Supercharged version that came after—not to mention the completely advanced new XJ—this is the car, along with the E Type, that comes to mind with the mention of a “Jag;” not unlike the 308 GTB/S will, for many years to come, be what comes to mind when mentioning “Ferrari,” despite the legacy before it or the major advances after. With that in mind, it would be very hard to come by a better representation of what a Jaguar saloon should be than the car presented today. Yes, it is a late-model Series III, but on top of that it is the crème-de-la-crème Vanden Plas, with its Connolly leather, tasteful brightwork, exotic wood trim and rear headrests. On top of that, it has less than 34,000 miles. All original and only one owner to boot. It looks to be amazingly well kept and especially nice in its Alpine green finish, which has held up very well. Find it here on Craigslist in Asheville NC for a relatively reasonable $8,500.

PICK OF THE DAY: Quality Jensen Interceptor Convertible

0_interceptor3

There are few cars that capture the glam of the 70s the way the Jensen Interceptor does. Particularly in Convertible form. It combined Italian styling with British appointments and powered by a big American lump. Typical of British cars of that era, it had some “quirks,” but it was and still is a gorgeous thing to behold inside and out. Finding one with little or no rust and/or mechanical woes can be difficult and restoration can be laborious and expensive. Their values simply haven’t reached a point to justify it. Therefore coming across a quality example is worthy of pursuit. This car is just that. With fresh service, excellent bodywork, new top, and a refurbished interior, this Interceptor stands out and looks especially nice in its triple Black color combo. With 70,000 mils on the clock, it’s low enough to ensure the Chrysler 440 has plenty of life, but not so low that it dissuades driving it. Priced right on the money at $20,600. Find it here on AutoTrader in Whites Creek TN.

ON THE LAWN: BMW 3.0 CSL Group 4 #25 Wins Class at Amelia

P90144627

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – March 11, 2014 . . . The BMW 3.0 CSL Group 4 race car that won the 1975 12 Hours of Sebring wins Best-in-Class at the 2014 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. The BMW 3.0 CSL Group 2 race car that won the 1973 European Sedan Championship takes second at the Concours. The highlight of the class of BMW 3.0 CSL race and road cars was the Alexander Calder BMW Art Car from 1975—the very first in the now legendary series of BMW Art Cars.

The 3.0 CSL race cars were the first cars to be developed under the then-new BMW Motorsport GmbH subsidiary, established in 1972 and led by Jochen Neerpasch.  They were also the first to sport the new official colors of BMW Motorsport—red, purple and blue. Based on the production 3.0 CS coupe, the aluminum skinned CSL (L = lightweight) homologation special, nicknamed the ‘Batmobile’ by its fans, formed the basis for an assault on Group 2 through Group 5 European touring car racing that would make it one of the most successful production racers of all time.

The class-winning 3.0 CSL was one of a group of five chassis campaigned by BMW of North America in the 1975 and 1976 IMSA Camel GT Series in Group 4 specifications. Campaigned under the racing numbers #24 and #25, the CSL enjoyed considerable success winning at Sebring, Riverside, Laguna Seca, Daytona and Talladega in 1975. Several iconic drivers were involved in the American success of the CSL’s, including Brian Redman, Hans Stuck, Sam Posey, Ronnie Peterson, Dieter Quester, Benny Parsons, Peter Gregg and David Hobbs. This car, sporting race number 25, is part of the BMW of North America Classic collection and is configured as it raced and won at the 1975 running of the 12 Hours of Sebring with drivers Brian Redman, Hans Stuck, Sam Posey and Alan Moffat.

The BMW 3.0 CSL race car that took runner-up honors was built in 1972 to compete in FIA Group 2. This particular car brought the 1973 European Sedan Championship to Dieter Quester and Toine Hezemans and is owned and vintage raced by BMW collectors Scott and Fran Hughes of Sunset, South Carolina.

The BMW 3.0 CSL class also included the car that won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1976 driven by Brian Redman, Peter Gregg and John Fitzpatrick.

A limited number of BMW 3.0 CSL models were produced and sold for street use in order to homologate the car for racing. The road-going BMW 3.0 CSLs featured in the class at the 2014 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance included a car entered by Indy 500 winner and BMW Team RLL team principal, Bobby Rahal.

The class-winning BMW 3.0 CSL #25 will be featured in the Gallery of Legends at the 62nd running of the 12 Hours of Sebring this weekend.

PICK OF THE DAY: Well Cared For BMW E24 M6

01313_fXUVqQXQNCE_600x450

While its genesis was in the E9 CSL Coupés that preceded it, the BMW’s M badge—at least on these shores—established itself in the 6-Series-based M6. It was launched here in 1987 and was the swan song to the E24 that enjoyed a 14-year run, due largely to its timeless styling and the kind of performance that delivers on the promise of “The Ultimate Driving Machine.” While it is 30 hp shy of its European counterpart, with its brilliant M88 inline 6 derived from the M1, its 252 hp was quite respectable for a 50-state GT in its day (more a Porsche 911 or Ferrari 308 with roughly the same weight as the Porsche). Today, it’s unusual to find a car with less than 100,000 miles for under $15,000. The M6 presented here has traveled 83,000 miles, appears to have been very well kept with complete service records, a tidy original interior and what looks to be original paint with only one spot of rust from a poor windshield installation (easily addressed). Find it here on Craigslist in Lexington KY for $14,000.

PICK OF THE DAY: Proper Acura NSX-T

35006684542.360971155.IM1.MAIN.565x421_A.562x421

Nearly 10 years after the Acura NSX ceased production, even the most Euro-centric enthusiasts among us still dart our eye towards one if it should pass by. Its only real flaw was that it wore the badge of a Japanese marque that was better known for sensible, economical transportation for soccer moms and grad students. Then again, the same could be said of Toyota and it took on the world with the 2000 GT. I know of few real car people who wouldn’t give a limb or discretionary million dollars to own a 2000 GT. That is not to say the NSX is destined for that kind of status, but they certainly do warrant respect for what they are. To this day, their shape is not dated and if it wore a badge like Pagani or Bugatti or something else that ended in ‘i,’ they would be media darlings (as demonstrated by the recent buzz surrounding the close-to-production NSX concept car that’s making its way around the show circuit.

If then you’re in the market for an NSX—or even if you haven’t considered one—you can’t do too much better than the one presented here. To begin with it’s a later model with the much-improved 3.2 Litre and 6-speed gearbox that propelled the car to 60 in under five seconds. There are still very few cars under a half million bucks that can claim that and the NSX does so with the aforementioned sensibility that comes from being a Honda. This car looks exceptionally good in its Kaiser Silver paint over a well cared for Onyx leather interior. With just under 52,000 miles, it’s not exactly vestal but it’s also not a weathered 100,000-mile example that so many NSXs are (further testament to their reliability). It’s a car that its next owner can do what it was meant for—to enjoy it—without too much bother of racking up miles. While it’s true that an older, high-mileage, 3.0 L NSX can be had for well under $30,000, this cars obvious care and improved drivability doesn’t make its asking price of $44,800 unreasonable. Find it here on AutoTrader in Incline Village, Nevada.

PICK OF THE DAY: Original One Owner Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser

00R0R_4nc0Bat3T9z_600x450

Few cars evoke ruggedness and durability the way the legendary Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser does. During its 24-year lifespan, it remained one of the most capable off-road vehicles on the planet, but near the end, after 1979, some refinements such as power steering, air conditioning and comfy seats were introduced, setting the table for the luxurious Land Cruisers we think of today. This example is from 1980 and was purchased new by its current owner from Toyota of Orange. It’s traveled 103,000 miles and in all of those, has only been off the road once. A California car for its entire life, it still wears its original Dune Beige paint on a completely rust-free body and looks fantastic. With restored examples fetching around the $60,000 mark, this one in completely original form is a relative bargain at half that. Find it here on Craigslist in Orange County for $29,500.
