ON THE BLOCK: Silverstone Classic Sale Expands to Two-Day Auction

1940 Alvis 12 70 Competition

For the first time this year’s award-winning Silverstone Classic (25-27 July 2014) will include an expanded two-day auction as one of the massive extravaganza’s major attractions.

Organised by Silverstone Auctions the enlarged Silverstone Classic Sale (26-27 July) will include a number of exciting lots that are sure to attract both collectors and enthusiasts.

Latest addition to the lots coming under the hammer is the eclectic ‘Molino’ private collection. It includes 14 classic cars and six motorcycles, spanning nearly 90 years of automotive history.

The collection, the first such to be consigned by Silverstone Auctions, is currently owned by well-known and highly successful Midland’s motor industry character, Mike Hewitt. Since retiring in 2011, he has spent his time acquiring and fully restoring a wide variety of cars and motorcycles that are now offered for sale at Silverstone circuit. It contains rare models from marques such as Fiat, Porsche, Jaguar and MG.

Topping the bill in the collection is a rare 1940 Alvis 12/70 Competition, estimated at between £100,000 and £120,000. This Alvis was raced in national hill climbs and international races from 2007 by the much-respected late Robin Everall.

Commenting on the collection, Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions, said: “We’re very proud to be offering this, our first ever private collection, for auction and to play a part in the cars’ histories. What’s even better is that the cars appeal to such a variety of tastes.”

Another incredibly rare British sports car to be offered in Silverstone Auctions’ two-day sale is – fittingly – a 1950 Healey Silverstone, one of just 105 ever built.

The dual-purpose car was hand built at the Donald Healey Motor Company factory in Warwick and was designed to be equally at home on the road or racetrack. Powered by a 104 horsepower 2.5 litre Riley engine and mated to a four speed manual gearbox, the car proved highly competitive in a number of events, including a class win in the 1949 Alpine Rally driven by Healey himself. It has an estimated value at between £160,000 and £180,000.

“The auction is an integral element in the growing success of the Silverstone Classic,” said Event Director, Nick Wigley. “The event is growing bigger and bigger every year and the enlarged two-day sale at this summer’s Classic mirrors that expansion. Moreover with lots such as the Healey Silverstone and wonderful Molino collection coming under the hammer, the auction has some real quality on offer.”

ON DISPLAY: Production McLaren MSO Bespoke 650S To Debut at Goodwood

mso_650s_spider_01

Jun 25, 2014 — McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has confirmed production plans for a run of bespoke examples of the McLaren 650S following the strong reaction to the MSO 650S Coupe Concept shown in China earlier this year. Just 50 examples of the MSO 650S will be available globally, available in either a Coupe or Spider bodystyle. The production car will make its global debut, in Spider form, at this summer’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in the Supercar Paddock, and will be seen in action taking part in the famous Hill run.

The bespoke McLaren Special Operations division was launched in 2011, and offers a full personalisation service for McLaren owners. The dedicated division grew out of McLaren’s Customer Care programme, which goes back 20 years to the days of the McLaren F1 roadcar, and continues to look after servicing and maintaining cherished F1s for owners, as well as undertaking personalisation work for all McLaren models.

The MSO 650S carries many of the styling cues over from the original concept, and the team at MSO has worked closely with McLaren Automotive Design Director, Frank Stephenson to further enhance the visual appeal. The exterior of the MSO 650S is fitted with a number of carbon fibre styling upgrades with a satin finish, including extended MSO Side Blades giving a subtle and purposeful look. The three-piece rear bumper includes a carbon fibre centre section, and sits above a more aggressive rear diffuser.

The MSO 650S is available in three paint finishes, specially formulated by the bespoke division of McLaren Automotive, all featuring a heavy metallic content. ‘Papaya Spark’ is the modern twist on the famous McLaren Orange and is joined by ‘Agrigan Black’ and ‘Sarigan Quartz’. ‘Agrigan Black’ is a stylish metallic black with a deep ruby red metallic flake, and featured on the original concept, while ‘Sarigan Quartz’ is a new colour for MSO, being shown for the first time at Goodwood Festival of Speed. It is a vibrant metallic silver with a subtle golden infusion.

The exterior design is finished with a set of Palladium coloured 10-spoke Super Lightweight alloy wheels, with a unique diamond cut effect to the inside edge of each spoke. These wheels save 4 kg over the standard-fit design, and are held in place by lightweight titanium wheel bolts.

Inside the cabin, the MSO 650S is upholstered with carbon black leather and Alcantara®, while the stylish satin lacquered carbon fibre detailing extends throughout the driver and passenger zones. In contrast, a gloss finish has been applied to the air vents and handling and powertrain switchgear on the Active Dynamics Panel. A signature dedication plaque mounted to the MSO-branded carbon fibre sill panel completes the enhancements.

Each one of the 50 MSO 650S models will be delivered with a Frank Stephenson-signed sketch and a luxury MSO branded, leather holdall. Handcrafted from stealth black carbon fibre leather, the weekend bag is fitted with complementing carbon black handles and stitching, and an Alcantara® lining.

Pricing starts at £252,500 for the MSO 650S Coupé and £272,500 for the MSO 650S Spider, with first deliveries due before the end of the year.

ON DISPLAY: Alfa Romeo Showcases History and Future at Goodwood

750 Competizione 1955

June 26-29 will see the West Sussex countryside play host to one of the most prestigious events on the international motoring calendar: The Goodwood Festival of Speed. Each year more than 150,000 fans, connoisseurs, collectors and VIPs from around the  world descend on Lord March’s idyllic Goodwood Estate to rub shoulders with the motorsport elite and to witness the world’s most iconic and exciting cars – past and present – in action on the iconic 1.16-mile hill-climb course.

For the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, there will be eight Alfa Romeo cars present: Five from the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo, representing the brand’s rich racing and engineering heritage, as well as the three highest-performance models from the current range. The event is also a celebration of the 60th Annivesary of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta: Unveiled at the 1954 Turin Motor Show, the Giulietta Sprint is one of the most iconic products of the Alfa Romeo brand as it made the dream of owning an Alfa Romeo accessible to motorists all over the world for the first time.

Alfa Romeo is delighted to welcome a star guest to its line-up: Toine Hezemans, “The Flying Dutchman”, who notched up numerous victories in various iterations of the legendary Alfa Romeo GTA – including the driver’s title in the 1970 European Touring Car Championship – will once again be behind the wheel of a 1971 Alfa Romeo GTA 1300 Junior on the Goodwood hillclimb. Setting the times behind the wheel of the Alfa Romeo 4C in the Supercar run will be Rupert Keegan, an ex-Formula One racer of the late 70s and early 80s.

Away from the track, the Alfa Romeo stand will not only will afford the British public its first chance to see the new Alfa Romeo MiTo and Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde in the metal, it will also have the Alfa Romeo 4C supercar on display alongside an original 1954 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint. The stand will also host the unveiling of a new coffee machine which was engineered into a genuine Alfa Romeo 1750 TBi engine block with help from the experts at luxury Italian coffee producers, Lavazza. Head of Brand for Alfa Romeo EMEA, Louis Carl Vignon, will be on hand to unveil the spectacular coffee machine at 11:45 on Saturday, June 28.

The Alfa Romeo vehicles at Goodwood:

Gran Premio Tipo B P3 (1932)

The Alfa Romeo Tipo B, better known as the P3, is one of Vittorio Jano’s masterpieces. Standout technical features of the legendary single-seater racer include its dual-supercharged 8C straight-eight engine and an innovative rear suspension which helped it out-handle its competition. All the most famous drivers of the 30s have sat behind the wheel of Tipo B cars: Nuvolari, Varzi, Caracciola, Trossi, Chiron and Moll all tasted victory in major international competitions in 1932 and 1933. Tazio Nuvolari’s victory over the strong field of German competitors at Nürburgring in 1935 is a particular highlight of the P3’s illustrious history.

Engine: 8 cylinders in line, 2,654cc, twin-camshaft, dual supercharger
Power: 212hp at 5600 rpm
Top speed: 232mph

Gran Premio Tipo 159 Alfetta (1951)

Juan Manuel Fangio won the first of his five F1 World Championship titles in 1951 behind the wheel of the single-seater Alfa Romeo 159 Alfetta. An evolution of the 158, which claimed the first World Champion in 1950 in the hands of Giuseppe “Nino” Farina, the 159 adopts a more sophisticated De Dion rear axle, improved aerodynamics and an upgraded, straight-eight 1.5-litre engine with dual-stage supercharger which could produce a peak output of up to 450hp.

Engine: 8 cylinders in line, 1,479 cc, twin-shaft dual-stage supercharger
Power: 425hp (up to 450hp) at 9,300 rpm
Top speed: 189 mph
Bodywork: Assembled by Zagato

750 Competizione (1955)

The Alfa Romeo 750 Competizione is a two-seater racing car that was designed to compete in the 1.5-litre sports car class. Its 1,488cc engine is derived from the contemporary “Giulietta” and produces an astonishing 145hp which, together with its particularly low weight, would have made the vehicle highly competitive had it ever competed. Sadly, the project never reached its full potential and what is coming to Goodwood is only one of two ever built and the only car in full working order.

Engine: 4 cylinders in line, 1,488 cc, twin-camshaft
Power: 145hp at 9,500 rpm
Top speed: 137mph
Bodywork: Boano

Giulietta SZ Coda Tronca (1960)

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ (Sprint Zagato) is one of the most performance-oriented versions of the original Giulietta, as well as the rarest – only 30 were ever built in Coda Tronca (stub-tail) guise. It is capable of reaching 200km/h (124mph) – an astonishing speed when you consider it was powered by a little 1.3 litre engine. However, this was Alfa Romeo’s legendary twin-cam 1.3-litre which produced 100hp and which, when combined with the aluminium, aerodynamic Zagato body and ultra-low 740kg weight, resulted in impressive performance and handling, making it a favourite car for gentlemen drivers in the 1960s.

Engine: 4 cylinders in line, 1,290 cc, twin camshaft
Power: 100hp at 6,500 rpm
Top speed: 124mph
Bodywork: Zagato

GTA 1300 Junior (1971)

The Alfa Romeo GTA 1300 Junior incorporates some of the most advanced engineering of the late 1960s. Evolved from the original 1.6-ltire GTA of 1965 and using technologies such as direct injection and dual ignition, Autodelta (Alfa Romeo’s racing division) was able to squeeze 170hp from its 1.3-litre, normally aspirated, twin-camshaft  engine. The GTA went on to claim the European Touring Car Championship for Alfa Romeo in 1971 and 1972, while the 1300 Junior which retained the aluminium body, with the later addition of flared wheel arches, was also successfully raced particularly in the hands of Toine Hezemans, “The Flying Dutchman”, who will be reunited with it at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Engine: 4 cylinders in line, 1,290 cc, twin camshaft, dual ignition, direct injection
Power: 170hp at 8,200 rpm
Top speed: 137mph
Bodywork: Bertone

Alfa Romeo 4C

The award-winning Alfa Romeo 4C returns to the Goodwood Festival of Speed after making its UK debut and first dynamic appearance at the event in 2013. Embodying the best of Alfa Romeo’s DNA, the 4C is powered by a turbo-charged 1,750, all-aluminium engine which sends 240hp to the rear wheels via an advanced twin dry-clutch Alfa TCT transmission. Constructed predominantly from carbon fibre, aluminium and composites, the Alfa Romeo 4C can accelerate to 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds, reach a top speed in excess of 160mph, generate 1.2g of braking force, 1.1g of cornering force and tips the scales at just 895hp (dry weight). In addition to collecting numerous awards and appearing in countless magazine and website articles across Europe since its launch in 2013, the Alfa Romeo 4C also features regularly on television thanks to its role as Official Safety Car of the 2014 SBK Superbike World Championship and 2014 World Touring Car Championship (WTCC).

Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde

The new high-performance Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde makes its UK debut at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The first Alfa Romeo to bear the Quadrifoglio Verde was the ‘RL’ driven by Ugo Sivocci that won the Targa Florio in 1923. Since then all racing Alfa Romeo’s have carried the emblem for good luck and in the 1960’s they also began appearing on high-performance versions of road-going Alfa Romeo cars. The new ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ versions of the MiTo follows in the tyre-treads of the best of these Alfa Romeo models, drawing on their heritage of performance and driving pleasure without compromising on efficiency, respect for the environment and everyday practicality. Powered by a 170hp 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo Petrol 170hp engine, in combination with the ALFA TCT transmission (with steering-wheel paddle shifters) for the first time, the MiTo QV now accelerates to 62mph in just 7.3 seconds and tops 136mph but with improved economy and reduced emissions – 10% and 11% respectively.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2014 with the new Quadrifoglio Verde high-performance version, which also makes its UK debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Powered by the same 240hp, aluminium-block , direct-injection, 1750 Turbo Petrol engine – and state-of-the-art, six-speed, twin dry clutch ALFA TCT transmission – as the as the Alfa Romeo 4C supercar, the new Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde also employs a similar Launch Control system as the 4C, which optimises engine, transmission and traction systems to accelerate the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde from 0 to 62mph in just 6.0 seconds – 0.8 seconds faster than the model it replaces! A new “QV Intake Engine Sound” system accentuates the full, exciting engine sound one expects from a high-performance Alfa Romeo while interior enhancements include a new flat-bottomed steering wheel; instrument panel with Quadrifoglio Verde logo and new wraparound sports seats with one-piece backrests.

PICK OF THE DAY: Original 81,000 Mile BMW 320i

00l0l_8AtmxrAxAlG_600x450

Described as a survivor, this 1981 BMW 320i presents very well in its excellent original paint and upholstery. Under one owner from new until 2013, with excellent records, it appears to be have been impeccably maintained as well. For whatever reason, the E21 3 Series (the first to have been officially called a 3) have been skipped over by most enthusiasts who either seek the E10 2002s or its successor, the E30. This may simply be due to the era, when manufacturers were burdened by emissions and safety regulations before figuring out an engineering solution whereby they could comply without compromise. This impression is further jaded by the later cars (1980-83) receiving a smaller 1.8 liter engine (US opting to keep the 320 moniker as it was the only E21 available here). While the 1.8 is somewhat less powerful, with just over 100 hp, the later cars also benefitted greatly from chassis refinements that shed about 80 kilos. The result was a more spry performer, better in fact than the highly revered, top-of-the-line 2002tii which came before it. The 320i was also a much more solid feeling car than the 2002, with smooth, precise shift linkages and a 50/50 weight distribution (100 kg more than the 2002) that gave the car a more firmly planted rear end. This particular 320i is also nicely optioned with air conditioning (not working), manual sunroof and AM/FM. It has its original toolkit, manuals and sales documentation as well as a stack of receipts. With the values of outstanding-example 320i’s poised to leap, there aren’t many left as original and tidy as this one. Find it here on Craigslist in Pleasonton CA priced to sell at $7,900.

ON THE HILL: Jaguar F-Type R Coupé and XFR-S Shooting Brake to Debut at Goodwood

Jaguar_F-Type_Coupé_R-002

(Whitley, Coventry – 20 June 2014). Long-term supporter of the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed, Jaguar, will be making some noise at next week’s event from 26-29 June with an exceptional line-up of its cars, both old and new.

Visitors to the Jaguar stand at the spectacular automotive show will be delighted to see the first new product from Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations – the new division of Jaguar Land Rover responsible for a range of special product and service programmes for Jaguar and Land Rover customers.

Chiming perfectly with Goodwood’s 2014 Festival theme of ‘Addicting to Winning’, Jaguar will have an extensive selection of its past, present and near-future models at the event, including victorious examples of the racing D-type, XJS TWR and XJR-9 tackling the famous 1.16-mile hillclimb.

Two of the Jaguar Heritage Trust’s significant D-types will be in action as this legendary Jaguar marks its 60thanniversary.  The original 1954 D-type prototype will be demonstrated, as will the later 1956 ‘Long Nose’ model, to be driven by ex-Grand Prix racer Bruno Senna. Bruno recently covered over 1,000 miles in this car at the 2014 Mille Miglia, with co-driver and fellow Formula 1 star, Martin Brundle.

Other Jaguar Heritage competition racers in action at Goodwood will include the iconic ‘Group 44’ E-type, the Group-A XJS TWR and the 1988 Le Mans-winning XJR-9 LM, the latter being reunited with one of its victorious team drivers; Andy Wallace.

Away from the competition cars, examples of Jaguar’s new production F-TYPE R Coupé and XFR-S Sportbrake will be publically seen in action at the Festival, with both set for high speed drives up the famous Goodwood Hill.

PICK OF THE DAY: 48,000 Mile Volkswagen GTI 20th

00h0h_8rzcZmTdGVZ_600x450

Marking 20 years since the U.S. launch of the world’s most successful “hot hatch”—and the one that’s credited with creating the category—Volkswagen of America celebrated the occasion with the GTI 20th Anniversary. Of the 4,200 made, about a quarter were in Imola Yellow, nodding to Ferrari’s Giallo Fly (Black Pearl and Jazz Blue were the other two available colors). Despite its limited production, not much reverie was given to keeping them pure and most eventually ended up glommed among the other MK 4 Golfs that are highly coveted by the tuner set. Some were genuinely elevated to astonishing feats far beyond what anyone would imagine possible from what is essentially a people’s car. Others are nothing short of abominations. Few were left untouched. This is an Imola Yellow 20th that has remained mostly pure, with its turbo-back exhaust the only modification. And that is a good thing. With only 48,000 miles, it gives its next owner the option a more or less blank canvas upon which to either tune or preserve. It is otherwise described as “basically mint” and does appear to be exceptional clean and well cared for. Find it here on Craigslist in Allentown PA for $11,000 or best offer.

IN THE NEWS: Mercedes-Benz Announces New Generation CLS (Still Not a Coupé)

14C472_167

Mercedes-Benz founded the four-door coupe segment ten years ago with the CLS, thus underlining its leading role in automotive design. The CLS combined for the first time the elegance of a coupe with the comfort and functionality of a sedan. It was also the first vehicle to offer dynamic LED High Performance headlamps as an option, turning it into the lighting icon. The CLS Coupe has long since established itself as a style icon with particular charisma, and will also continue to be unique in its segment.

Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development: “With the CLS Coupe and the CLS Shooting Brake we have built design icons which also set the pulse racing faster in their latest incarnation courtesy  of their enthralling lines. With new high-tech ingredients such as the innovative MULTIBEAM LED headlamps which start a new chapter in lighting design, the nine-speed automatic transmission or the progressive multimedia system, both models also define new cutting-edge technology.”

The scintillating design of the CLS-Class with its exciting proportions has been subtly adapted to high-tech aspirations. It steadfastly remains a compelling proposition with its long hood, narrow window line with frameless side windows and dynamically downwards sloping roof.

Overall the design of the latest generation of the CLS Coupe comes across even more dynamic. This is thanks to a new, expressive chrome diamond radiator grille, a striking front bumper  with large air intakes and slightly darkened tail lights.

New dimensions in lighting systems

Both models now come as standard with all-LED headlamps in a new design. Alternatively both vehicle models are available as an option with the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps as designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz is opening a new chapter in lighting systems with this innovation. Since the MULTIBEAM LED technology combines the very best of today’s lighting technologies and can optimally adjust the light distribution instantly and automatically to virtually any traffic situation, it always ensures thus far unrivalled broad and bright illumination of the road surface and edge of the roadway for high performance and precision without dazzling other car drivers.

In addition to the camera on the windshield, this new lighting system uses four control units per vehicle, which calculate the ideal light pattern 100 times per second and control all 24 high-performance LEDs in each precision LED
module quickly and individually. Each LED is dimmable in 255 stages.

New MULTIBEAM LED headlamps provide exceptionally fast and precise, anti- dazzle continuous main beam and light up the road surface and its edges much more brightly in many situations.

Best visibility on bends and in curves

As well as the high-performance, precision LED module, each MULTIBEAM LED headlamp also features a module for the low-beam headlamp, which can be swivelled outwards  by up to twelve degrees. This provides an active light function, which is also camera-controlled, with unprecedented characteristics. For instance, it offers a preview function which already swivels the active light function when the driver has yet not turned the wheels. Thus it provides optimum illumination of the bend early on. The active light function already swivels back to the straight-ahead position before the end of the bend
according to the particular situation. This allows the driver to identify dangers earlier when entering and exiting bends. The anticipatory control allows an additional range of between 30 and 60 metres depending on the traffic situation.

The curve light is also unique, which activates the cornering light function modules on the left and right before entering a roundabout in order to provide the best visibility on all sides at an early stage. The navigation system provides the headlamps with details of the locations of roundabouts along the route.

Sporty interior with contemporary luxury

Ample space, unadorned, sporty elegance, perfect craftsmanship and high- quality materials exert the stylistic influence on the interior of the CLS family. The new generation reinforces this impression by emphasising sportiness, exclusivity and functionality even more.

The new color display in the head unit with its 8 inch (20.3 cm) screen adds to the state-of-the-art feel and will help define the dashboard’s contemporary looks. Other new features include a redesigned three-spoke sports steering wheel and a host of exquisite details which underscore the interior’s high quality both in visual and tactile terms. The central control panel in the center console has four instead of the previous two buttons, thus requiring fewer operating steps in many cases. Five attractive interior  colors and six trim finishes will be available and offer a host of potential individualization options.

Efficient, sporty engines

The CLS400 houses a new 3.0L V6 bi-turbo engine which delivers an impressive 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. The CLS550 has a 4.6L bi-turbo V8 engine with power outputs of 402 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque.

New automatic transmission with nine gears

Cutting-edge technology also comes in the shape of the world’s first 9-speed automatic transmission with hydrodynamic torque converter in the premium segment. This innovation builds on the strengths of the previous 7-speed automatic transmission which set the benchmark in terms of efficiency, comfort and dynamism. With nine forward gears this new transmission reduces  fuel consumption while further enhancing shift comfort and agility. The CLS550 rear-wheel drive will be the first to offer this new transmission, with the other models receiving it later.

Hallmark Mercedes high level of safety

To make top-class safety available for everyone, the CLS-Class will in future be fitted with a host of new assistance systems along with existing systems with upgraded functionality. Standard-fit features include the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, which can help prevent rear-end collisions – if necessary through autonomous braking.

The state-of-the-art assistance systems from the E-Class and S-Class can also be fitted as an option. These include DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, PRE-SAFE® PLUS, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC including lateral parking manoeuvers and a 360° camera.

Optimum connectivity

A completely new multimedia generation will offer intuitive operation in the CLS Coupe, including elaborate  animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner.

The Audio 20 CD or optional COMAND Online infotainment systems are available in combination with the new 8-inch color display in the head unit. Both enable the internet to be surfed without restrictions when the vehicle is stationary. The prerequisite is a Bluetooth®-capable mobile phone with data option. Also standard is an integrated media interface to connect an iPod® and iPhone®.

In conjunction with COMAND Online, Mercedes-Benz Apps such as Weather, GoogleTM Local Search with StreetView and Panoramio, destination/route download and Facebook are now all offered. Audio and video playback is possible from various sources, e.g. via Bluetooth®, from the Apple iPod® and iPhone®, from SD card, USB stick or CD/DVD.

Modern-style navigation

Another new offering with the CLS facelift is the user-friendly Garmin® MAP PILOT navigation system, which comes standard on the CLS400. Its strengths include 3D views with exact representation of streets and buildings and photo- realistic junction and lane assistants. The navigation  software and the map data are stored on an SD card, which is simply inserted in the dedicated slot of the Audio 20 CD with preparation for the Garmin® MAP PILOT.

Standard on the CLS550 is the COMAND Online with fast 3D hard-disc navigation, topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations as well as display of NASA satellite images provides a decidedly sensuous experience. System features include an animated compass and display of Google Maps on the head unit. The navigation system can also provide real-time information about the situation on the roads when it receives its traffic data in COMAND Online via the internet by means of the Live Traffic Information service.

Telephony via Bluetooth® with HD Voice capability as standard

The basic Audio 20 CD system and COMAND Online both support HD Voice- capable basic telephony, which connects the mobile phone to the vehicle via a standardized Bluetooth® interface. HD Voice provides much better voice quality. In conjunction with convenience telephony the high-speed LTE network can also be used in future if a compatible smartphone with a relevant contract is used.

The US market will launch with the following 2015 models in the fall of 2014. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

PICK OF THE DAY: Nearly There Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint

01212_i2mfDyyZAVQ_600x450

After a long period of hesitation, the market for ‘60s Alfas has become hot in the past six months. Most of the attention is directed toward the Type 101 Giulia and Giuliettas, however the touring cars are seeing the lift as well. While obscure in comparison, fans of Fellini and Rosselini films may recognize the 2600 Sprint as the car of choice for the Caribinieri. It’s not hard to see why. The 145-hp six cylinder was more than capable of a spirited chase along twisty country roads, whist offering its drivers and occasional occupants ample comfort to enjoy the scenery. Its styling was by Bertone, but more significantly it was the first project under the Carrozzeria’s new head of design, Giorgetto Giugiaro. Its shape went on to influence dozens of other cars from Fiat, Lancia, Opel, and more. Giugiaro, meanwhile, would go on to create some of the world’s most memorable designs like the Lotus Esprit, Volkswagen Golf and Scirocco, and yes, the Yugo. An Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint rarely comes on the market and when it does it’s typically offered by one of the high-end collector car suction. This particular 2600 is offered by private party. Seller describes it as a good driver-quality but that may be underselling it. There is no evidence of any rust and interior appears to be tidy and original, except for an older recovering of the seats. The car will need a proper paint job and new headliner to be show quality, but as is, appears to be a very presentable example. Find it here on Craigslist in Miami FL for a reasonable $25,000.

ATLANTA.   For the second year in a row, Porsche ranked highest among all nameplates in the J.D. Power Initial Quality StudySM out of a total of 32 international automakers covered in the U.S. study.

The Porsche 911, Boxster, and Panamera models ranked highest in their segments, receiving the J.D. Power Award as the vehicles with the highest level of initial quality in the Midsize Premium Sporty Car, Compact Premium Sporty Car, and Large Pre- mium Car segments, respectively. This is the third year in a row that the Porsche 911 finished highest in its segment and the second year in a row the Boxster finished highest in its segment. The Porsche Cayenne SUV ranked second in the Midsize Premium SUV segment.

The Porsche factory located in Leipzig, Germany, which produces the Cayenne and Panamera models garnered an award for the highest ranking plant in Europe/Africa.

“The acid test is customer satisfaction,” said Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Execu- tive Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG. “We are delighted we can meet the high quality demands of Porsche drivers. For us, the ratings are both a demonstration as well as an incentive to continue along our path to quality growth.”

The annual J. D. Power Initial Quality Study, now in its 28th year, serves as an in- dustry benchmark for new vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership. The response of more than 86,000 U.S. car buyers forms the basis for the study. These buyers indicated how satisfied they were with the quality of their new cars during the first three months of ownership. The study evaluated a total of 239 vehicle models from 32 carmakers, which were initially registered between November 2013 and Feb- ruary 2014. The owners answered questions on more than 233 criteria from different categories.

This is an extremely hard to find 1967 Cougar Dan Gurney Special. Only 15,166 of these were built and here is your chance to one at No Reserve. This car has all the right options. The engine is the 289-4V engine and has the beautiful Lime Frost paint (color code I) and also comes with the black standard bucket seats in perfect condition. The transmission is the C-4 Select shift Merc-O-Matic which shifts perfectly. The previous owner has owned it for about 15 years, and it looks to have had an older restoration, we think 10+ years ago. However, the car is in extremely good condition. This is the Dan Gurney Special which was available for this year. This includes the engine dress-up kit and the Dan Gurney sticker on the rear passenger window. The car comes with the Marti Report that shows the car’s VIN number and trim numbers decoded so you know exactly what you are getting.
