IN THE NEWS: Mercedes-Benz Unleashes 621-hp S65 AMG Coupé

July 14, 2014. Affalterbach. The S65 AMG Coupe is the new twelve-cylinder top-of-the- range model in the S-Class Coupe series. Unique drive comfort, benchmark performance and exquisite appointments are all hallmarks of this stuning new two-door. The irresistible contours of the V12 Coupe are accentuated by a host of expressive design elements in high-sheen chrome. The AMG 6.0- litre V12 biturbo engine, with an output of 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, is unique in its segment, as is the AMG sports suspension, based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL with curve tilting function and ROAD SURFACE SCAN.

Coupe, Sedan and Roadster: following the S65 AMG and the SL 65 AMG, the new S65 AMG Coupe is the third AMG high-performance car with a V12 engine to come to the United States market. Globally, no other car manufacturer in the world offers such a wide portfolio of twelve-cylinder vehicles as Mercedes-AMG. In 2003, the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz presented a coupe with a powerful V12 biturbo engine in the form of the CL65 AMG (C215 model series). Its successor, the CL65 AMG (C216 model series) was available between 2007 and 2014 and was the direct predecessor to the new S65 AMG Coupe.

Power transmission with three individual driving modes

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC is responsible for transmitting power to the rear axle. The transmission offers three individual modes: the driver can choose between Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M) by pushing a button on the center console. Sport and Manual emphasize the vehicle’s dynamic pedigree. The ultimate emotional appeal and tangible sportiness are ensured by the brief, precisely defined cutback of ignition and injection when shifting up a gear under full load. This shortens shift times and lends an audibly more emotive tone to gearshifts. The ECO start/stop function is activated in transmission mode “C”.

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 44 lbs

The S65 AMG Coupe features a lithium-Ion battery as standard equipment. This innovative technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept. With a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 44 lbs.

AMG sports suspension with curve tilting function

The AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL delivers an incomparable driving sensation. The standard combination of Active Body Control (ABC), ROAD SURFACE SCAN and curve tilting function is unique. This function allows the S65 AMG Coupe to lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting on the occupants is similar to driving on a banked curve. On country roads in particular, the curve tilting function heightens motoring enjoyment and comfort. The object is not to reach higher cornering speeds, but to produce an even more pleasant motoring experience. The curve tilting function can be selected as one of three drive modes using the ABC switch, and it is active in the speed range from 10 to 111 mph.

On bends the vehicle leans into the turn automatically and continuously in fractions of a second – depending on the curve radius and vehicle speed. The innovative suspension system detects curves using both a stereo camera behind the windscreen, registering the curvature of the road up to approximately 50 feet ahead, and an additional lateral acceleration sensor. The curve tilting function is making its United States debut in the S65 AMG Coupe.

ROAD SURFACE SCAN is a technology that can detect surface undulations in advance with the help of a stereo camera. MAGIC BODY CONTROL then adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation, effectively compensating for irritating chassis movement. Both suspension modes – “Comfort” and “Sport” – are also available here. In addition the AMG sports suspension, the S65 AMG Coupe features specific elastokinematics – the driver therefore benefits from more directness with a dynamic driving style.

Speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio

The electromechanical speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio perfectly complements the sophisticated suspension technology by optimizing vehicle handling and agility while maintaining driving safety at high speeds. In “Comfort” suspension mode, the speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the “Sport” suspension setting is selected, the driver feels a stiffer and more commanding level of steering assistance. The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback from the road surface and steering precision.

Polished forged wheels with fully integrated wheel bolt cover

The S65 AMG Coupe features forged wheels in a multi-spoke design, size 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the rear, with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires. The exclusive forged wheels of the V12 Coupe fascinate with their exceptional design that represents a contemporary interpretation of the classic sports car rims. Each of the 16 spokes twists so that the light-catching contours radiate to the center of the wheel hub. The ultimate effect is that the wheel gives the impression of being even bigger.

The matchless visual superiority of the ceramically polished, high-sheen AMG forged wheels is the result of an elaborate finishing process. Initial polishing is followed by manual grinding of the light-alloy wheels. Two polishing stages using different polishing compounds ensure the desired deep sheen. Having been cleaned, the wheels then undergo final treatment, including final clear coat sealing.

The forged wheels feature a high-quality, screw-on, fully integrated wheel bolt cover in forged aluminium. Its shape is reminiscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG lettering is incorporated into the rim as a design element. Additional forged wheels are available as optional alternatives – one design variant features a matte black finish and high-sheen rim flange.

Optional ceramic high-performance compound brake system

The AMG high-performance compound brake system features brake callipers with a grey finish. Red callipers are also available, and a ceramic high- performance compound brake system is optional. This design, which is more than 20 percent lighter than its conventional counterpart, ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility, ride comfort, and brake performance.

Design: irresistible contours, lavishly accentuated with chrome

Supreme sportiness combined with the sensual clarity typical of Mercedes-Benz – the irresistible contours of the S65 AMG Coupe are a captivating sight. V12- specific features include the countless design elements in high-sheen chrome at the front, sides and rear which are particularly effective in conjunction with dark paintwork. The large central Mercedes star on the front apron, the “twin blade” radiator grille, all of the air intake grilles, the trim strip on the “A-wing”, the side flics (air deflector elements) and the front splitter are chromed-trimmed. The three-dimensional front splitter increases downforce at the front axle, while the gap above the front splitter ensures an effective flow of air to the separate engine oil cooler behind it.

At the side, the eye is drawn to the “V12 BITURBO” lettering on the wings and the high-sheen chrome inserts in the side skirts which harmonize perfectly with the high-sheen polished forged wheels. The rear view is also unmistakable. The AMG sports exhaust system’s two chromed twin tailpipes in V12 design are integrated into the rear apron. Above the distinctive diffuser insert, painted in high-gloss black, the trim element forms an effective contrast. It echoes the design of the “A-wings” on the front apron and is finished in high-sheen chrome.

Interior: equipment, quality and ambience of the highest standard

The extraordinary character is also evident on the inside. The S65 AMG Coupe welcomes its occupants with an incomparably exquisite ambience. This two- door features the finest materials, the highest manufacturing quality and an extensive range of standard equipment. In visual terms, the interior is dominated by the sports seats. The upholstery in designo AMG Exclusive Nappa leather with seat upholstery layout in a diamond-pattern design boasts delineated perforations which ensure beautiful harmony between perforations and stylistic stiching. The result is exceptionally neat seams and an unrivalled impression of quality.

Exclusively developed AMG sports seats ensure optimal long-distance comfort. Electric adjustment, memory function, seat heating and climate control are standard features. More contoured seat cushions and backrests improve lateral support when cornering at speed. High-quality AMG badges are prominently displayed on all four backrests, and the AMG crest is embossed on the front centre console.

Other features of the exclusive package include the Nappa leather roof liner, a leather-lined dashboard, door center panels in a diamond-pattern design, leather-clad roof grab handles, chromed door pins and AMG stainless steel door sill panels illuminated in white. Customers ordering designo AMG Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery are able to choose between black, porcelain/espresso brown, saddle brown/black and crystal grey/black.

New sports steering wheel in a three-spoke design

The new three-spoke sports steering wheel allows perfect vehicle control. It features shift paddles, a distinctly contoured rim trimmed with perforated leather in the grip area, and a metal insert featuring AMG lettering.

Another typical AMG speciality is the AMG instrument cluster. Information on the engine speed, vehicle speed and much more appears on two animated round dials on the 12.2 inch, high-resolution colour TFT display. The typography, the needles in red/silver, the speedometer with its 220 mph scale and the “V12 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter all have a distinctive AMG look. When the driver’s door is opened, an AMG start-up screen appears on the right-hand display, while an animated S65 AMG Coupe appears in the instrument cluster.

Extensive standard equipment with head-up display and touchpad

The extensive range of standard equipment for the S65 AMG Coupe includes the head-up display and the touchpad. The head-up display projects key information such as the vehicle speed, speed limits, navigation directions, traffic signs and information from DISTRONIC PLUS onto the windscreen. The visualization of the engine speed and the current gear is exclusive to AMG. In manual transmission mode, a colored upshift bar and the possible gears for a manual gear change are also projected onto the windscreen. The virtual colour display, measuring 8 x 2.75 inch, appears to hover above the hood at a distance of around two meters from the driver. The innovative Mercedes-Benz touchpad makes it significantly easier to operate the radio, telephone and navigation system. In contrast to conventional systems, the touchpad can be used to operate all of the infotainment functions. The input area is approximately 2.5 x 1.7 inches in size and is integrated into the handrest with a cover for the keypad.

Intelligent Drive: new standards in safety

The S65 AMG Coupe also sets new standards in terms of active and passive safety. What began with PRE-SAFE® ten years ago and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS is now leading to a new dimension in driving. Comfort and safety have merged into one. Mercedes-Benz calls this Intelligent Drive. Ground-breaking systems make the new S-Class Coupe even more comfortable and safe.

ON THE BLOCK: RHD Ferrari 250 GT/L Lusso at Salon Privé

Regarded by many as the most beautiful of Pininfarina designs for Ferrari, an extremely rare 1963 Ferrari 250 GT/L ‘Lusso’ is to be sold at Silverstone Auctions’ inaugural sale at Salon Privé on September 4th, estimated at between £1.75 and £2million.

Just 22 right hand drive cars were built, with some reports suggesting that today just 17 examples remain. First appearing at the 1962 Paris Salon, the car generated much admiration for its exquisite proportions. This particular matching numbers car is so special thanks in part to the comprehensive restoration, which it received by respected craftsmen Auto Restorations NZ of Christchurch in the years to 2010.

Confirming its quality, the car was crowned Winner in the Masters’ Class of the NZ Classic Car Weekend Intermarque Concours d’Elegance and it beams in Rosso Cordoba coachwork with contrasting Tan leather interior. It now joins the sale from a significant UK collection.

Commenting on the sale of this very special motorcar, Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions, said: “It’s a privilege to be able to offer this exciting and beautiful car in our new sale. Salon Privé deservedly enjoys its reputation as one of the UK’s most prestigious luxury automotive events and this car is sure to be one of the highlights of the auction.”

The model joins a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Series II Coupe, estimated at between £375,000 and £425,000, and a 1926 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Sedanca by Knibbs & Parkyn, once owned by a Costa Rican diplomat, estimated at between £80,000 and £100,000.

More exceptional cars have already been consigned into the new auction, taking place following the signing of a joint venture between the event organisers and Silverstone Auctions. Details of these cars will be announced over the coming weeks.

ON THE BLOCK: The “Real” Bond Aston Martin at COYS

A 1954 Aston Martin DB 2/4, considered as the inspiration for James Bond’s original Aston Martin in Ian Fleming’s novel Goldfinger, is to be auctioned by international auctioneers COYS this Saturday 12th July at Blenheim Palace.

This iconic car will be featured alongside over 90 important motor cars, including a fine selection of Jaguars.  The auction will also feature over 90 motorcycles, which are to go under the hammer on Friday 11th.

The Aston Martin, a DB 2/4 Mk I Vantage, chassis number LML-819, was owned by Phillip Ingram Cunliffe-Lister, whose father was Lord Swinton, a close confidant of Winston Churchill, head of MI5 and the Security Executive during WWII, and Ian Fleming’s boss. Moreover, the vehicle was regularly at Fleming’s next-door neighbour in Kent, which was the same place where he based the HQ of Sir Hugo Drax in his Bond novel Moonraker.

All the gadgets that appeared in Bond’s car in the Goldfinger novel appear in this Aston Martin, including reinforced steel bumpers, concealed lockers, a heavy-duty anti-interference ignition system, driver’s seat connections for two-way radio and a Halda Speed Pilot.  This model is a strong contender for the world’s most significant Aston Martin ever to be offered to the open market.

Chris Routledge, Managing Partner of the auction house, said “This could be one of the most important discoveries of all time, confirming the link between the undoubtedly most famous spy in history and possibly the world’s most iconic sports car marque”.

Also appearing at the auction will be a 1951 Jaguar Mk V Drophead Coupé, one of the most desirable cars of its time, with exceptional performance and handling. Its age has added lustre to its reputation with the stylish drophead coupé being particularly desirable.  Estimated at £50,000 – £60,000, these were one of the most luxurious models of their day and still turn heads today.

A 1934 Bugatti Type 57 Series I Ventoux is estimated to make £275,000 to £320,000, featuring a ‘profilee’ windscreen and what were known as ‘spats’, which fill the rear wheel arches.  This is an uncommonly pure example of the superb early version of the design; the frontal aspect is balanced by a small integral projecting luggage boot, the exterior handsomely finished in Embassy Black and retains the correct wire wheels.

Alongside the car auction, attendees have been invited to bring with them their own classic cars, comprising a Concours d’ Elegance, which is set to feature the likes of a 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, a 1967 Lamborghini Miura and many more, all of which will be judged by a selection of guest judges.

This selection of judges includes BBC Oxford’s Roving Reporter Lilley Mitchel, AC Owner’s Club Chairman Bertie Gilbart Smith, Royal Marine Lt Colonel Cliff Dare MBE and Karen Ellis, the CEO of Ellis Clowes specialist motor sport insurance company.  This event will provide a bit of light hearted entertainment, as well as giving those present a chance to showcase their own classic cars.

To celebrate the 350th anniversary of Royal marines, a number of military vehicles will be present on the day at Blenheim Palace, including a 1941 Austin Utility, a 1944 Bedford M.W, a 1936 Morris Commercial CS8 Mk3, amongst others. This marks a momentous anniversary of a vital part of Britain’s Armed Forces, who were formed on the 28h October 1664 after an Order-in-Council was issued calling for 1200 soldiers to be recruited for service in the Fleet.  The military vehicles will be accompanied by a group of Royal Marines Cadets, and will be judged by Lt Colonel Cliff Dare, who will award the winner the 350th Anniversary Cup.

Not only will COYS be putting an extensive selection of classic cars under the hammer, they will also be putting over 90 motorcycles to auction on Friday 11th July at Blenheim Palace.  Featuring among these motorcycles is a 1920 Henderson 1300 four cylinder, complete with a stylish sidecar assembled by Ferrari, which was an exhibit in the sidecar museum near Ancona.  A very rare find, this Henderson is estimated at £55,000 to £70,000, and is presented in a well-preserved condition.

Also featuring at the motorcycle auction on the 11th is an extremely rare Harley-Davidson XR750, described as one of the most famous racing bikes in American motorcycle history, estimated to go for £25,000 to £30,000.  This model was limited to the public through only authorised dealers, meaning even in its day it was a rarity, dominating ‘flat track’ racing for over 10 years.

IN THE NEWS: Jaguar F-Type Project 7 to Debut at Le Mans Classic

F-TYPE Project 7 – the most powerful and fastest production Jaguar to date – will make its dynamic debut in front of packed crowds during this weekend’s Le Mans Classic race meeting from 4-6 July.

Following its unveiling at Goodwood’s Festival of Speed – where customer interest far exceeded the intended production run of a maximum of 250 units – F-TYPE Project 7 will complete demonstration laps throughout the Le Mans Classic weekend.

In celebration of the Jaguar D-type’s 60th anniversary – a car which won at le Mans three times and which inspired Project 7’s genesis – F-TYPE Project 7 will complete its demonstration laps alongside the very first D-type ever built, and with examples of the all-new F-TYPE R Coupé.

With racing over the weekend split into six grids – each celebrating an era of Le Mans’ history – the F-TYPE Project 7 demonstration laps will take place ahead of qualifying and race sessions for Grid 2. Spanning 1949-1956, this grid will include two Jaguar-entered D-types; drivers are 1988 Jaguar Le Mans winner, Andy Wallace, who will share with Richard Meaden, with Gary Pearson and Chris Harris also in action.

F-TYPE Project 7 is a fully road-legal two-seater roadster, which will be built by Jaguar Land Rover’s newly established Special Operations division. Of all aluminium construction and with bespoke carbon-fibre aerodynamic aids, a unique suspension tune, 80kg weight reduction and 575PS power output, F-TYPE Project 7 will deliver a truly focused driving experience. Carbon Ceramic brakes, Torque Vectoring by Braking and race-inspired seats are all standard features.

As a sleeper in the making, the BMW E21 has thus far been overlooked by most collectors and enthusiasts, being viewed more as a   high schooler’s car or upscale economy car. As such, most have been driven hard, succumbed to rust, and generally not held in the same kind of esteem as the 2002 that came before it, or even the E30 that came after. It is a pity as the 320i (as we knew them on these shores) possesses all the traits that make any BMW a BMW: excellent driving characteristics, driver-oriented comfort and ergonomics, build quality and dependability. It is, for the moment, also an opportunity as the 320i is poised for deserved recognition. In particular the ‘S’ model, which BMW added in the US market in an attempt to stimulate slow sales of the 320i. Atop the its already desirable attributes, the 320is adds Recaro seats, stiffer suspension, special wheels, and a unique front air dam, among other refinements. This particular 320is is an excellent example of an E21 that has been given the love and respect that these cars warrant. It is said to be all original with no paintwork and a just over 40,000 miles covered by a single owner. Every aspect of this 320is radiates pampering, from the quality of the finish and wheels, to the spotless interior, to the meticulous records and documentation. Though priced well above current E21 values, it is still at half of what a comparable-quality, round-tailight 2002tii might bring. PICK OF THE DAY: Original One-Owner 50,000 Mile BMW Bavaria

As it was when it was new, the BMW Bavaria is a much-loved classic sport sedan. The Bavaria was the US version of the E3 and was well-equipped with full leather interior, air conditioning, and power accessories. On top of its comforts, the Bavaria is every bit Ultimate Driving Machine. With a 3.0-litre inline six, shared with the legendary CS Coupé, power comes on strong and works through a smooth, crisp 4-speed gearbox, typical of BMW. Steering is tight and suspension—biased toward handling over ride—is nevertheless silken and makes for a proper touring car. With nearly 35,000 Bavarias imported between 1971 and 1977, they aren’t particularly hard to find. Many however have succumbed to rust and, despite—or perhaps because of—having an ardent following, those that survived have been driven routinely—habitually even— without much regard for preservation. Finding a low-mileage, rust-free example is rare, but here is one that is not only that, but an original, one-owner 3.0 Bavaria. Though it wears a few battle scars, paint is said to be all original. Interior could do with some sorting, but is also original and shows no decay. Drivetrain is also original, with only the Zenith carbs swapped for Webers. ON THE LAWN: Maserati Wins Best in Show at Goodwood Concours

A sensational Maserati A6 CGS Berlinetta was named ‘best in show’ at the Goodwood Festival of Speed’s Cartier ‘style-et-luxe’ concours d’elegance.

The event, which was held on the Cartier lawn, celebrated its 20th running at the Festival of Speed and celebrated the best in exquisite automotive design throughout the history of the motor industry.

The Maserati, which is owned by Egon Zweimuller Jr, took victory in the coachbuilt Maserati-only Class 3: ‘The height of fashion’, and later beat off competition from the other class winners to claim the overall spoils.

The judging panel was chaired by Mail on Sunday editor Geordie Greig and also featured Olympic gold medallists Sir Chris Hoy and Sally Gunnell, actor Rowan Atkinson, Apple design chief Sir Jonathan Ive and renowned handbag designer Anya Hindmarch plus other notable names from the worlds of sport, the arts and design.

Class 1: ‘Vintage Voiturettes’ was won by Keith Bowley’s 1925 Amilcar CGS while victory in Class 2: ‘Blown Away’, which was held just for Mercedes 500Ks, went to Winfried Ritter’s Cab A model.

A 1960 Lincoln Continental, owned by the La Salle Collection, triumphed in Class 4: ‘Affairs of Status’, while Class 5: ‘Mid-engined masterpieces’ went to Stephen Keen’s 1968 Lamborghini Miura P400S.

Bill Shepherd’s 1966 Ford Mustang Mustero won Class 6: ‘Horses for Courses’ which celebrated American cars powered by small-block V8 engines, while victory in Class 7: ‘Best foot forward’, marking front-engined British sportscars of the 1990s, was won by Graham Abbott’s 1997 TVR Cerbera Speed 12.

 

PICK OF THE DAY: Solid Original Triumph TR6

With the end of the Triumph TR6 in 1976, so too was the beginning of the end for the British roadster. With Karmann styling atop a Michelotti design that began with the TR4 40 years ago, and the last of the affordable six-cylinder roadsters, the TR6 had the longest run of any of the TRs. With nearly 100,000 produced over eight years, it was also the most popular. Its popularity remains today for its classic styling, respectable performance and relative affordability. In other words, all the traits of a true British roadster. While prices have seen an upturn in the last several months and No. 1 cars are fetching over $30,000 at collector car auctions, decent examples can still be found for $10-15K. This TR6 appears to be a solid, rust-free, original car with a very straight body and original interior, though it does show some cracks on the dash pad and possible splitting in the driver’s seat. With only two owners, it’s benefited from long-term care, the current owner being its steward for nearly 30 years. According to seller it’s not far off from mint condition. PICK OF THE DAY: Nicely Preserved Volvo 145

When it was time to replace Volvo’s classic rounded shapes of its Amazon and earlier PV cars, they thought out of the box. Or rather, they created the box, which would become a Volvo hallmark for the next 40 years.  The boxiest of these was its wagon form, the 145. Like the 122S Wagon which preceded it, it was immediately popular for its build quality, safety and cavernous cargo room. In 1971, the 145 was further adored for having a new fuel-injected motor providing a very respectable 135 hp as well as a 4-speed gearbox, now with electronic overdrive. Volvo 145s don’t come on the market very often and those that do are mostly a testament to Volvo’s legendary durability, logging hundreds of thousands of miles and looking the part. This 145 appears to be a remarkably well preserved 90,000-mile example showing some patina in the paint and a leather interior that has been under seat covers for most of its life, thus looking practically new. A fair amount of recent mechanical attention has been given to it as well, making for what could be a very enjoyable car for a very long time. 145s and 245s have long been a favorite of the “hooning” set, but this one deserves to receive the careful preservation it’s been accustomed to. Priced at $4,500, it is a rather attractive package. FORBIDDEN FRUIT: Limited Production Peugeot 208 GTi 30th Unveiled at Goodwood

The 208 GTi 30th delivers a more intense driving sensation enhanced with a new Euro6 1.6-litre THP petrol engine developing 300Nm of torque and maximum power increased to a symbolic 208hp. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, it has exceptional traction and efficiency assured through the specification of a Torsen differential, specific suspension and steering settings.The exterior can also be distinguished with an optional paint finish – a coupe franche – where the rear is separated distinctively by a sharp dividing line from which the colours are cleanly divided.

A year after its commercial launch over 10,000 Peugeot 208 GTi Hatchback cars have been produced, confirming the success of the reinterpretation of the GTi icon and the strategy to offer a well-specified, performance sports model from PEUGEOT in the B Segment.

PEUGEOT has left its mark on the history of motor sport and DNA can be found in the genes of the 208 GTi, as in those of the RCZ, and its R version greatly enhanced by PEUGEOT Sport. As Peugeot celebrates 30 years since the original 205 GTi, it is now the turn for the 208 GTi to benefit from the expertise and racing pedigree of the engineers at Peugeot Sport. They have worked to give it a more radical character with what some call ‘extra soul’, in response to expectations by driving enthusiasts to have an authentic product with real capability.

A coherent exclusive signature with a more radical temperament

“The 208 GTi 30th builds on the virtues of a strong identity, great attention to detail and in the style of the 208 GTi, and takes on a more radical and brutish fashion, making the link with the incisive character of its dynamic performance,” Julien Kerlidou – Product Manager 208.

From the outset, the exclusive and more radical temperament shines through with the 208 GTi 30th. The suspension is lowered by 10mm, the track widened by 22mm at the front and 16mm at the rear, and larger wheels are specified giving it a pronounced sports car posture on the road.

The chic bright chrome finishers on the 208 GTi are replaced by matt black on the 208 GTi 30th, giving it a more brutish look. At the front the same treatment is applied to the grille surround, the fog lamp bezels and door mirror shells. From the side, the lowered stance is accentuated by matt black side skirts and wheel arch extensions that cover new 18″ wheels finished with matt black rims. The front wheels house large red PEUGEOT Sport labelled brake calipers. The window trim strip, which finishes with a signature paying homage to the illustrious 205 GTi, is also finished in matt black, while the quarter panel bears a ‘208 GTi 30th logo’. At the rear, the round twin chrome tail pipes ensure the sound of the new engine is fully expressed to enhance the aural driving experience.

Finally, the 208 GTi 30th could only be finished in colours that identify this sporting world. The interpretation uniting the red and black in a two-tone and dual material treatment is innovative and unique. The front is finished in a textured black, contrasting with the new high-gloss red at the rear. The two colours are divided by a sharp oblique straight-cut line (a ‘coupe franche’), as first seen on the Onyx Supercar Concept and reinterpreted on the 308 R and Exalt Concept cars. The 208 GTi 30th will also be available in Pearl White and Ruby Red – historical colours of PEUGEOT GTi cars.

Perfectly consistent with its exterior signature and dynamic character, the interior ambience has a more radical sports character developed for the 208 GTi 30th. The red fading to black finishers on the 208 GTi change to lacquered black. The black door handles with a red line echo the seat belts. High-quality floor mats are trimmed in red, while the front bucket seats are of a form specially developed by PEUGEOT Sport. These seats are trimmed in an exclusive blend of materials, mainly Alcantara, accompanied by black TEP with red stitching and a black dotted mesh pattern with red highlights.

A numbered plate marked ‘208 GTi 30th’ positioned above the courtesy lamp finishes off this limited edition anniversary model.

Unrestrained driving sensations for incisive behaviour on the road

“Based on the 208 GTi, itself already a very effective and well powered car, our ambition was to focus on behaviour on the road, by further increasing its effectiveness. For this we have developed the traction and a potential for more grip, mainly on the front axle. The benefits are essentially in passing speeds, driving sensations and feedback,” Pierre Budar –208 GTi 30th Project Manager.

The sensations begin when taking the wheel of the 208 GTi 30th. For the driver, familiarisation is simple and obvious as is directing the car. The compact steering wheel makes it easy to place the vehicle and enhances driving sensations. The instruments, positioned above the compact steering wheel, are directly in view. This facilitates the reading of information, which becomes instantaneous, without the driver having to take their eyes off the road.

Consistent with its specific dynamic character and pronounced driving sensations, this driving position is ideally complemented by a specific ‘bucket’ seat developed by PEUGEOT Sport. Together with the small wheel, the head-up instruments and feedback from the compact steering and suspension, it allows the driver to be at one with their car.

The new 1.6-litre THP engine, meeting the Euro 6 emissions standard, is fitted with Stop & Start. Its maximum torque is increased to 300Nm and maximum power to 208hp, an immediate reference to the model name. The power and torque are transmitted to the wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox with specific gear ratios, and a Torsen differential – both taken from the RCZ R, allowing the full potential of the vehicle to be exploited.

The ESP and traction control are recalibrated, so as to be less intrusive when driving and to set free the vehicle’s traction and allow the Torsen to operate. The advantage provided by the Torsen and the reduced anti-roll at the front are felt in particular when accelerating in a corner by maintaining tight trajectories, and when braking, with improving stability.

The lowered centre of gravity and redefined suspension geometry (wider track, camber angle, wheel alignment, 0.5’’ wider wheels) and the Michelin Pilot Super Sport 205/40 ZR 18 tyres optimise grip and ensure remarkable road holding.

The steering calibration has also been the subject of much development work, both on a track circuit and on the road. The objective was to obtain a linear level of assistance appropriate for the character of the car, taking account of the effect produced by the Torsen differential.

Associated with new damper settings and spring rates, as well as revised anti-roll, the steering is informative. All together it offers both precision and agility. The 208 GTi 30th can count on a braking system to match the performance achieved, with 323mm diameter and 28mm thick discs at the front and Brembo fixed four-piston calipers.

The sporty temperament of the 208 GTi 30th can also be seen in the figures: 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds and standing kilometre in 26.5 seconds. Mid-range acceleration is also of a high level with with 5th gear acceleration from 50 to 70mph possible in 6.0 seconds. Its performance and sharper handling are achieved with efficiency that is unprecedented in the segment, with CO2 emissions of just 125g/km.

The 208 GTi 30th again demonstrates that emotion, sportiness and efficiency are engrained in PEUGEOT’s heritage and genes
