CHICAGO, Ill. (October 2, 2026) — The 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello that Michael Jordan drove through the Chicago Bulls’ final championship seasons has sold for $2.7 million on Joopiter, more than double the top of its $700,000 to $1.3 million estimate. The sale sets a new benchmark for the 550 Maranello. High-mileage examples can still be bought for less than $150,000, and the best low-mileage cars have sold for more than $500,000 this year.

Jordan’s car, chassis № 108712, was offered as Lot 1 in Joopiter’s “Driven to Greatness” auction, which closed on September 30. It returned to the market after nearly a quarter century out of public view, showing 18,501 miles.

Michael Jordan’s Daily Ferrari
Jordan took delivery of the 550 Maranello on May 29, 1997, through Foreign Cars Italia of Greensboro, North Carolina. It was finished in Rosso Barchetta over tan leather with chrome Speedline wheels. To fit Jordan’s 6′6″ frame, the driver’s seat was customized with extended rails and slimmer-than-standard padding so it could be set as far back as possible. The factory warranty card, still with the car, carries his signature.

Registered with an Illinois plate reading MJ 5, the car became a familiar sight during the Bulls’ run of championships. Joopiter says Jordan drove it out of the United Center on the night he won his fifth NBA title in June 1997, and he put about 6,400 miles on it driving to home games, practices and appearances. The car also inspired the Air Jordan XIV. Designer Tinker Hatfield carried its quilted leather, air vents and shield-shaped badge into the shoe, which Jordan wore when he hit the title-winning “Last Shot” against Utah in June 1998.

Lost and Found
Jordan sold the Ferrari through Lake Forest Sportscars in Illinois in December 2002, and it then disappeared from public view. For nearly 24 years there were no confirmed sightings, and collectors counted it among Ferrari’s missing celebrity cars.

The breakthrough came after a decade-long search led by John Temerian, co-founder of the dealership CURATED. A partial chassis number turned up on an old online forum, allowing the team to reconstruct the full VIN. Ferrari’s historical dealer records still listed chassis № 108712 under Jordan’s name with the MJ 5 plate. With that, CURATED traced the car to a longtime California owner who had never offered it publicly. Temerian bought it sight unseen, and on May 29, 2026, exactly 29 years after its original delivery, the car returned to Chicago.

The Ferrari 550 Maranello
The 550 Maranello brought Ferrari’s V12 flagship back to a front-engine layout after two decades of mid-engined flagships. Its 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 produces 485 hp and is paired with a gated six-speed manual, giving a top speed of 199 mph. Ferrari built 3,083 examples between 1996 and 2001. Rosso Barchetta over tan leather, the combination on Jordan’s car, is one of the rarest specifications offered on the model.
