WOTTON-UNDER-EDGE, U.K. (July 2, 2026) – Today, McMurtry Automotive initiates a new era of automotive performance as it reveals the production form of its single-seater, electric hyper track car—the Spéirling PURE—ready for owners to experience.

Designed from the outset in the name of unfiltered driving exhilaration and fun, and with 95% new components compared to prototype models, the Spéirling PURE delivers truly accessible F1-level performance that any driver can enjoy, with a strong focus on a plug-and-play ownership experience.

Following a decade-long research and development program, during which Spéirling prototypes have accumulated thousands of miles in testing, McMurtry has leveraged its engineering creativity and worked outside of “industry norms” to create a track vehicle that is unlike anything else in the automotive world.

McMurtry first captured global attention in 2022 when the Spéirling prototype set a new Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb record—beating many established manufacturers before it. In 2025, it shattered the Top Gear Test Track record, once held by the 2004 Renault F1 car. That same year, the Spéirling prototype broke new ground to become the first car to ever drive upside down.

What’s New from Prototype to Production
In production form, the Spéirling PURE represents the culmination of relentless research and development to produce a hyper track car that comprises 95% new components compared to prototype models. Improvements made from prototype models include:

Powertrain

  • Increased Battery Capacity: Now 100 kWh—up from the 60 kWh batteries used in prototypes—to improve overall running time, using Molicel P50B NCA 21700 cells.
  • Standardized Modular Design: A modular McMurtry battery design with built-in futureproofing for evolution upgrades.
  • Enhanced Regenerative Braking: Energy recovery up to 200 kW at all states of charge.
  • Upgraded Drive System: New Helix drive motors with additional torque, mated to an upgraded gearbox.
  • Optimized Cooling: Moved the powertrain cooling system from the rear to the front of the car, bringing dual benefits in efficiency and aerodynamics. Despite the production-spec Spéirling PURE growing slightly in size to accommodate the larger 100 kWh battery, airflow across the car and through its rear tunnels is much cleaner.

Chassis and Bodywork

  • Refined Design: New exterior and interior designs, staying true to the original Spéirling philosophy.
  • Motorsport-Spec Monocoque: New carbon fiber monocoque designed to meet global motorsport safety standards. It accommodates the larger battery, enhances cabin space with more elbow and legroom, improves ingress/egress via a wider door opening, and features a repositioned A-pillar for a wider field of view.
  • Extended Wheelbase: Increased wheelbase from 78.7 inches to 86.6 inches (2m to 2.2m) to accommodate the new 100 kWh battery.
  • Improved Doors: Secondary door is now hinged, with wider hinge spacing further aiding ingress/egress.
  • Functional Aero: A swan-neck style rear wing, incorporating a trunk compartment underneath for a helmet and HANS device.
  • Track Visibility: Headlights to allow for evening/nighttime track running.
  • Safety Features: Track day safety features including turn signals, hazard lights, brake lights, and high-beam flashers.

Downforce-on-Demand™ System

  • Enhanced Durability: New fan blades for enhanced durability.
  • Optimized Center of Gravity: New fan motors and cooling design, plus overall assembly position relocation to improve the center of gravity.
  • Upgraded Underbody Skirt: Under-car downforce skirt durability and travel improvements, able to perform for thousands of miles.
  • Onboard Air Compressor: Integrated into the Downforce-on-Demand™ skirt system. The skirt can be retracted independently for trailer loading and slow-speed maneuvering, such as when in the pits. Spéirling prototypes required an external air bottle to pre-charge the system.

Suspension and Steering

  • Increased Articulation: Increased suspension articulation, alongside a nominal ride height increase of 20% when in use.
  • Wider Michelin Slicks: 11% wider front and 3% wider rear off-the-shelf slick Michelin tires. Increased sidewall height by 0.6 inches (15mm) front and rear to improve compliance.
  • Hydraulic Power Steering: Electric power steering system replaced by a hydraulic power-assisted steering system with Formula 1-style valving for lighter steering and increased driver feedback.
  • Adjustable Dampers: Electronically adjustable dampers available as an optional extra.

Performance Explained with Downforce-on-Demand™
The Spéirling PURE delivers a totally unique driving experience via McMurtry’s patented, revolutionary Downforce-on-Demand™ technology. This system produces up to 4,400 lbs of downforce from 0 mph, instilling absolute confidence in drivers to push the car to its limits at 3g in corners and 3g under braking.

Two high-speed fans generate immense suction beneath the Spéirling PURE, effectively pulling it onto the track surface—much like a giant, highly controlled vacuum. Spinning at up to 23,000 rpm, the bespoke fans draw air from a sealed region beneath the chassis through filters, creating immediate and consistent downforce. As air is expelled from the rear, the Spéirling produces a sound more commonly associated with a jet engine than an electric vehicle—a striking contrast to the near-silence typically expected from EVs.

The system uses dual fans for built-in redundancy, ensuring that even in the highly unlikely event of an issue with one unit, the driver retains control of the car. Unlike traditional downforce that is primarily generated by direction-specific airflow over wings or under diffusers, the Spéirling PURE maintains downforce even during a spin, allowing drivers to come to a controlled stop in a much shorter distance.


New Exterior and Interior Design
The exterior design of the production-spec Spéirling PURE sees significant changes from prototype models, yet the McMurtry design team focused on maintaining the car’s unique stance and proportions.

The car’s wheelbase (+10%), width (+14%), and length (+11%) have increased to accommodate the larger battery and onboard systems, but the vehicle fundamentally remains compact. New carbon fiber bodywork has been sculpted around these new dimensions. Relocating the Downforce-on-Demand™ fan system lowered the center of gravity and allowed the fan inlet ducting to be visible—a unique design element.

The Spéirling PURE’s interior has taken a significant step beyond purely functional design to become a more refined and sophisticated environment. Each seat is uniquely tailored to its owner—custom-molded in a process similar to that used in Le Mans prototypes—ensuring a precise fit that provides exceptional comfort, support, and crucially, a strong connection to the car. A range of optional colors, stitching, stripes, and logos can be selected for the seat, steering wheel, and dashboard trim.

A bespoke racing-style steering wheel has been engineered to provide intuitive access to key controls while driving at speed, featuring a fan rev paddle for pitlane fun. A central screen delivers instantly legible graphics for key information such as power and fan settings, state of charge, speed, and temperatures to inspire confidence behind the wheel.


A Seamless Ownership Experience
Vehicles capable of extreme performance are synonymous with being difficult to service and complicated to run—detracting from the enjoyment of ownership. The Spéirling PURE breaks this trend, being designed from the outset to provide owners with a straightforward, plug-and-play experience.

With just a driver and a competent friend, the Spéirling PURE can be run at track days or competitive events—a stark contrast from what is required to run other ultra-high-performance track vehicles. If owners desire, however, a full factory support program is available to make running a Spéirling PURE seamless.

With many race tracks now home to high-speed charging infrastructure, the Spéirling PURE can be recharged from 20% to 95% in 20 to 60 minutes, depending on ambient temperature and charger power. As an optional extra, McMurtry has developed a portable 100 kWh storage, 120 kW output power bank to allow Spéirling PURE charging at any venue. The power bank itself can be charged by any conventional three-phase pit garage source.

Access panels have also been added to the monocoque and bodywork, meaning when fully assembled, the Spéirling PURE can be serviced with far greater ease, with key components easily accessible. An example is emptying the fan filter cassette via quick-access panels in the side pods.

Unique Customization
An extensive options program gives customers the opportunity to make each Spéirling PURE truly their own. During the order process, customers collaborate with an in-house designer to create a highly personalized specification, choosing from an array of wheel designs, unique graphics, paint finishes, and bespoke interior trim. No two cars will be the same.

Competing in the Spéirling PURE
The Spéirling PURE is eligible for competition in events such as Global Time Attack in the USA and European Time Attack Masters at the Nürburgring. Non-competitive but race-inspired events, such as the GT1 Sports Club, are also recommended.

Origins
Named after the Gaelic word for “thunderstorm,” the Spéirling PURE is the brainchild of the late Irish engineering pioneer, Sir David McMurtry, and former Formula 1 engineer, Thomas Yates.

As the inventor of the globally ubiquitous touch-trigger probe measurement device and founder of Renishaw plc—the UK’s largest metrology equipment supplier—Sir David hand-picked Thomas Yates from Mercedes F1’s High Performance Powertrains division to establish McMurtry Automotive in 2016. Their goal was to create a new form of vehicle, going against the automotive industry’s trend of bigger and heavier cars. To put the McMurtry name on the map, they revived and modernized fan car downforce technology inspired by the successful 1970s Can-Am and Formula 1 fan cars, building the Spéirling around it.

A Spéirling PURE will be creatively displayed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next week, July 9–12.

The car will make its official public debut in full production form at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in Monterey, California, next month on August 14.

McMurtry Owners Club
A calendar of bucket-list track events is organized throughout the year and supported by factory engineers, technicians, and driver coaches. It is an exclusive community for McMurtry owners, enhancing Spéirling ownership into a shared social and driving journey.

  • Advanced Driver Training: The club provides training to help drivers extract the most from their Spéirling. For example, the first event in Sweden focused on ice driving (near zero grip) before experiencing the Spéirling’s supreme downforce on track.
