We’re days away from the opening of Luftgekühlt 11 at the American Tobacco Campus (ATC) in Durham, NC on October 4. It will be the first ever East Coast event for the ground-breaking air-cooled Porsche event series and only a few tickets are still available!
Embedded in the historic location, visitors will experience 400 air-cooled Porsches displayed throughout the venue, including a celebration of the US anniversary for the type-993 Porsche 911, plus celebrated racing vehicles such as the 917/30, 962, 934, Supercup, RSR, 550 Coupe and more from names such as Rahal, Holbert, Penske, Alex Job Racing and others.
In addition to the machinery, several Porsche racing legends will be on hand to share their experiences behind the wheel, including Bobby Rahal and Tommy Kendall. Rahal will meet visitors on the Main Stage and in the 1948 Lounge to talk about his 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS on display, while Kendall will join fellow racer and Luft co-founder Patrick Long for a discussion on the Main Stage. The full itinerary for the day is available below.
MOBIL 1 THEATER: WHERE RACING MEETS FILM
Continuing the racing theme, Mobil 1 brand will present two movie premieres in the Mobil 1 Theater, which can be located on the event Directory HERE.
Both movies can be viewed throughout the day, along with other air-cooled Mobil 1 videos. The premiere for Relentless (Project EVO) will take place from 10 to 10:30AM followed by a Q&A with Project EVO builder, Betim Berisha. The movie is about Berisha and BBI Autosports’ quest to develop the extraordinary car, including its recent Pikes Peak adventure with Jeff Zwart.
The premiere of Powering Icons: Dieter Inzenhofer takes place at 12:30PM, followed by a Q&A with Dieter moderated by Jeff Zwart at 12:45PM and an autograph session at 1:15PM. It’s a film about Inzenhofer’s quiet obsession, which shaped the sound of Porsche’s golden era. “From the heart of Andial to the summit of motorsport, his legacy roars to life” in this video.
PORSCHE 917/30 FEATURE CAR
As final details are being confirmed, we’re able to announce the addition of the venerable 917/30, which was introduced in 1973 as a development of the already dominant 917/10, which won the 1972 Can-Am season. Exclusive to Team Penske, the 917/30 was physically bigger and its 5.4-liter engine saw performance rise to approximately 1100hp in race trim, or closer 1500hp at full boost. With Porsche’s most powerful engine installed, a new aerodynamic body was fitted over the longer chassis, helping to increase top speed and improve the handling.
In 1973 there was no stopping the ‘Turbo Panzer,’ which lapped up to second place in some races! As a result, Mark Donohue won the championship in 917/30-003, acquiring more than twice as many points as second place. In 1975, Donohue drove chassis 003 to a new FIA record at Talladega Superspeedway for the fastest closed course lap at 221.120 mph – a record that stood for 11 years, and remains the fastest lap at Talladega.
Details of this and the majority of cars at Luft 11 can be viewed at Bramo.co and via the QR codes on each vehicle.
TAG HEUER, SPIRIT OF LA CARRERA
Inside Bay 7 (#4 on the Directory), Tag Heuer will headline an exceptional display of 1950-60s Porsche racing history. The story of the iconic Carrera name, that became synonymous with the Porsche and Tag Heuer brands, originated from the Spanish word for race and its association with the Carrera Panamericana. The celebration will be brought to life with both historic vehicles and timepieces. The rare 1953 Porsche 550 Coupe chassis 001 from Revs Institute, with its Le Mans and Carrera Panamericana history, will provide a centerpiece to the immersive experience.
