MARANELLO, Italy (September 1, 2026) – Engineers and mechanics at Ferrari’s Maranello factory have completed the restoration of a Ferrari F40 acquired by Scuderia Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton, returning to working condition a car that had sat untouched in storage for more than thirty years.

Hamilton discovered the F40 covered in dust in a garage where it had remained for over three decades. The car was brought to Maranello, where Ferrari’s factory team spent weeks on a comprehensive mechanical overhaul, including engine-out work, to return the car to running order. Hamilton documented portions of the process on his personal Instagram account, sharing images of the car’s dust-covered arrival alongside its subsequent restoration.

The acquisition follows Hamilton’s 2025 decision to sell his entire personal car collection, reported at the time to be worth approximately $18 million, as he shifted his collecting focus toward art. Hamilton indicated then that the F40 was the one car that could draw him back into ownership, describing it as “a nice piece of art” rather than simply a vehicle. He had already ensured an F40 was present for his first official photoshoot after signing with Ferrari.

Hamilton’s pursuit of the F40 gained wider attention earlier this year after he was seen driving a red F40 belonging to Japanese collector Takeshi Kimura through Tokyo’s Daikoku Parking Area late at night alongside Kim Kardashian, a moment that circulated widely online ahead of news of his own restoration project.

Hamilton has separately floated the concept of an F40-inspired Ferrari he has referred to as the “F44,” referencing his own racing number, envisioned as a modern car channeling the F40’s raw character with a potential manual-transmission option. No such project has been confirmed by Ferrari.
