DEARBORN, Mich. (August 14, 2026) – Ford today unveiled the Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible, a new range-topping open-air Mustang built to compete directly with the world’s premier sports car marques. It is the first vehicle of its kind from Ford since the 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible, and it arrives with a fundamentally different mission: less raw muscle-car aggression, more refined grand-touring performance.
The Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible is powered by the same 5.2-liter supercharged V-8 found in the standard Dark Horse SC coupe, producing 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque, figures that make it the most powerful roadgoing convertible ever offered in the Mustang’s history. Power is routed exclusively through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
“What we’re really doing with the SC is we’re deepening Mustang’s presence in the premium sports car segment to go head-to-head with the world’s elite sports car competition, like the Porsche 911, and win,” said Ryan Shaughnessy, Ford Mustang marketing manager.
Engineered for Open-Top Grand Touring
While it shares its powertrain with the SC coupe, the convertible has been specifically tuned for its distinct mission. Compared with the coupe, the SC Convertible features softer calibration for its MagneRide adaptive dampers, shocks, and anti-roll bars, along with more reined-in ABS and electronic stability control tuning. Aerodynamic elements, including the hood extractor and spoiler, have been revised to suit the convertible’s differently shaped rear decklid. The car rides on 20-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero R tires, matching those fitted to the non-track-pack SC coupe.
“Despite the softening of some of the elements to make that ultimate grand touring vehicle, the handling is outstanding,” said Arie Groeneveld, Mustang Dark Horse SC chief engineer.
“If the coupe is the race-bred side of our DNA, this convertible is the pure street cred part of the formula,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Racing. “It’s just pure fun, fast, freedom.”
Premium Design and Personalization
The Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible is offered in an expanded palette of exterior and interior finishes designed to appeal to customers seeking a distinctive on-road statement. Exterior options include Precision Purple, a shimmering paint finish, along with a unique brake caliper color option. Interior appointments are available in Black Onyx and Space Gray, with a range of seatbelt color choices and optional carbon fiber trim inspired by the Mustang GTD.
Ford said the decision to bring a range-topping convertible back to the Mustang lineup reflects sustained customer demand. “Our base Mustang, like EcoBoost and GT, on a blended basis, about one in five vehicles is a convertible,” said Shaughnessy. “We’ll build to customer demand; customers have asked us to do something like this on a Dark Horse.”
Competitive Positioning
The Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible enters a segment populated by established European performance nameplates, including Porsche’s range of open-top 911 variants up to the GT3 S/C and 911 Turbo Cabriolet, the Aston Martin Vantage Convertible, and the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 and SL 63 E-Performance. Domestically, it lines up against the convertible variants of the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and ZR1.
Availability
Orders for the Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible open this fall, with customer deliveries beginning in spring 2027. Pricing has not yet been announced. The Mustang Dark Horse SC coupe currently starts at $108,485.
