A new grille combines with the characteristic floating roof, unbroken waistline and flush deployable door handles that define the world’s most desirable luxury SUV family. Intriguing design

The Range Rover Velar is instantly recognizable as a Range Rover and its sophisticated elegance and dramatic presence remain undiluted. The vehicle pioneered the Range Rover reductive design philosophy and its new grille – alongside the introduction of new headlight design with jewel-like effect Signature Daytime Running Lights – ensure a unified look across the entire family.

At the rear, the powerful overhang provides balance and highlights the imposing length of the Range Rover Velar. Its pronounced kick adds to its muscular stance while a new lower rear bumper enhances its proportions.

New LED taillights echo this sophistication with an eye-catching 3D appearance and super-red illumination. They are complemented by a full-length high-level stop-lamp.

Inside, the bold, elegant interior of the Range Rover Velar is even more reductive, with outstanding craftmanship and new materials. The latest evolution of the Range Rover Pivi Pro7 infotainment forms the centerpiece; a single 11.4-inch floating curved glass interface is ergonomically positioned higher and within easier reach, to help minimize distraction and reflections1.

Range Rover Velar continues to offer a leather-free cabin option, with new seat designs and materials. The leather-free option combines wool from Danish textile experts KvadratTM with UltrafabricsTM polyurethane textile inserts, featuring a new Diamond Herringbone perforation pattern. Inspired by bespoke tailoring, KvadratTM wool blends are approximately 58% lighter than leather and provide a modern appearance and enhanced tactility for a contemporary take on traditional Range Rover luxury.

The innovative textile has been subjected to rigorous in-house durability testing in the Range Rover materials lab to ensure it delivers customary robustness throughout the lifetime of the vehicle, going through 60,000 cycles of abrasion testing – the equivalent of 10 years of usage – and UV tests capable of simulating three years of unrelenting exposure to the sun in just a month.

Three new leather colorways are introduced: Cloud, Raven Blue and Deep Garnet. These are complemented by a curated choice of details, including new Moonlight Chrome on the steering wheel, center console surrounds, and air vents. Technical Light Anodised or Dark Anodised Aluminium, or tactile Shadow Grey Ash wood veneer trim finishers underline its elegance.

Two new color options join the exterior palette: Metallic Varesine Blue and Premium Metallic Zadar Grey.

Connected technology

New Range Rover Velar is the first to feature the next-generation Pivi Pro7 infotainment. It incorporates controls for all key vehicle functions within the new 11.4-inch curved glass touchscreen1; its clean design appearing as if it is floating.

Controls for the climate, seating and audio volume are always visible at each side of the screen via new sidebars, featuring multi-functional sliding controls on either side. These virtual buttons are always visible and provide immediate access to frequently used items, including individual temperature controls for the front occupants, audio volume and Terrain Response® modes.

At the beginning of every journey, drivers are presented with a Pre-Drive panel for fast access to commonly used features, such as window defrosters and the optional heated seats. Once on the move, it disappears to reveal the familiar three-panel home screen that can be customized with hallmark Pivi Pro7 intelligence and flexibility.

For added convenience, additional controls in the permanently visible side bars include shortcuts for media and navigation, cameras and window defrosters.

The next-generation infotainment was the subject of extensive testing and development, both digitally and physically with human testers, to reduce task and interaction time and deliver the most user-friendly technology experience possible. Approximately 80% of tasks can be performed within two taps of the home screen.

Pivi Pro7 supports effortless smartphone connectivity with Wireless Apple CarPlay®2. Wireless Android Auto2 is also supported, while Wireless Device Charging – from a new storage area in the center console – provides immediate fast charging and reduces the need for wires.

With 80% of the vehicle’s total ECUs – spanning Pivi Pro infotainment, navigation mapping, and on-board diagnostics as well as chassis and powertrain systems – capable of wireless updates, the Range Rover Velar is able to receive the latest Software Over The Air with no need to visit a retailer.

New Range Rover Velar is also Wi-Fi Enabled with a Data Plan7, ensuring occupants remain entertained and connected. Pivi Pro7 features twin embedded eSIM technology and cloud-based architecture, meaning it provides full access to a range of online apps – including Spotify® and Deezer® – integrated within the infotainment system.

Amazon Alexa3 brings a new level of convenience, providing the ability to control various settings and features using natural voice commands while reducing the potential for distraction1. Alexa is embedded in Pivi Pro7 and can simply be activated by saying “Alexa” or tapping the Alexa button on the touchscreen.

For simple navigation, what3words® is also integrated within Pivi Pro7. The clever mapping technology divides the globe into a grid of 3m x 3m squares, each assigned a unique combination of three random words to provide a what3words® address. With these words drivers can navigate to an accurate and precise location.

Immersive sound and technology

The cosseting cabin of the Range Rover Velar minimizes road noise with pioneering Active Road Noise Cancellation technology8 – ensuring the New Range Rover Velar offers a quiet cabin. This technology senses external frequencies and automatically processes an anti-noise through the vehicle’s audio system, reducing overall interior noise levels.

A range of powerful Meridian audio systems for New Range Rover Velar is led by the optional Meridian™ 3D Surround Sound System, which delivers high-fidelity music playback using up to 17 speakers and 750W of amplifier power for an immersive listening experience.

Contemporary luxury

The New Range Rover Velar provides customary Range Rover refinement in a calm sanctuary, with heightened comfort and optional convenience features that help to promote wellbeing. 

The latest Cabin Air Purification Plus system is optional and helps promote occupant wellbeing, aiming to provide superior air quality. CO2 Management and PM2.5 Cabin Air Filtration improve the cabin environment by monitoring interior and exterior air and adjusting accordingly.

To activate, clients can simply press the Purify button on the Air Quality page within Pivi Pro7 and reduce the level of harmful allergens or particulates inside. The system also combines nanoe™ X technology designed to combat pathogens and help significantly reduce odors, bacteria and allergens.

Configurable Cabin Lighting, providing a choice of 30 interior colors to illuminate the doors, console and footwells is available as an option. Preset color themes make it easier to find the perfect combination, while every occupant can select their ideal interior temperature using the four-zone climate control.

Electrified performance and capability

New Range Rover Velar has power to suit every client. A range of smooth Ingenium gas engines, with 6-cyl P400 featuring Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology that optimizes performance.

Acclaimed Range Rover ride comfort and refinement is provided by advanced chassis and suspension set-ups in the Range Rover Velar. Optional Electronic Air Suspension provides serene comfort, maintaining its composure on rougher roads while smoothing out bumps with Adaptive Dynamics, an advanced chassis system that continuously varies the damping forces at each wheel5.

The latest generation of Ingenium gas 6-cyl engines are available with 48-volt MHEV technology for enhanced efficiency and power delivery, using a Belt integrated Starter Generator (BiSG) to harvest energy usually lost under deceleration. It is stored in a 48-volt lithium-ion battery beneath the rear load-space. It can redeploy the energy to assist when accelerating, while also delivering a more refined and responsive start-stop system.

The 3.0-liter straight-six Ingenium gas engine, the P400 delivers 395hp and 405lb-ft, with acceleration from 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds6.

The 2.0-liter four-cylinder now features a new smoother-shifting automatic eight-speed transmission. The P250 provides 247hp and 269lb-ft, with 0-60mph in 7.1 seconds6.

Adaptive Dynamics5 is standard on the P400 six-cylinder models and ensures suspension stiffness is optimised for the driving conditions, improving ride comfort and handling. There’s even a specific calibration for off-road driving. Advanced chassis and suspensions, including Electronic Air Suspension, Adaptive Dynamics and Configurable Dynamics, deliver exceptional performance and agility on-road5.

Supreme all-terrain performance is also offered, with assured Range Rover breadth of capability thanks to an intelligent torque on-demand all-wheel drive (AWD) system. It provides the optimum torque distribution to suit various conditions, whether driving dynamically on the road or pulling away from a standstill on slippery surfaces5.

Terrain Response® 2 is accessible through Pivi Pro7 and allows the driver to adjust vehicle settings to suit the driving environment, with a choice of Eco, Comfort, Grass-Gravel-Snow, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Dynamic and Automatic mode5. Each alters the calibration of the engine, transmission, all-wheel drive system, suspension, and stability control systems for optimum traction and composure.

IN THE NEWS: Land Rover Builds One-Off Defender to Mark Number 2,000,000

Whitley, UK, June 22 2015 – Celebrating 67 years of iconic Land Rover production, a unique vehicle has been built to commemorate the UK production of the two-millionth Series Land Rover and Defender.

With a bespoke design and an all-star cast of special guests helping to complete the momentous build, ‘Defender 2,000,000’ has been created to be a fitting tribute to almost seven decades of Land Rover production in the Solihull plant, UK.

In December 2015, collectors and Defender fans will be given the opportunity to own this unique piece of Land Rover’s history when it is auctioned by prestigious and globally renowned auction house, Bonhams. Reflecting Defender’s heritage, all proceeds will be donated to Land Rover’s humanitarian and conservation partners – the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Born Free Foundation.

Dr Ralf Speth, Chief Executive of Jaguar Land Rover, said: “Over 67 years, the Series Land Rover and in turn Defender has been the transport of choice for explorers, charity organisations, farmers and even royalty. Throughout history it has helped pioneers to reach the unreachable. What started life as an agricultural workhorse has transcended the automotive world to become a worldwide design icon. I was honoured to join the production line team in Solihull to help build this unique vehicle. It was a special experience which will no doubt become a fond memory.

“The auction of this milestone vehicle is an opportunity to own a piece of Land Rover’s history, as Defender enters its final phase of manufacturing in Solihull. Giving people the chance to buy this truly distinctive Defender to raise funds for the IFRC and Born Free Foundation is a suitable way to celebrate the role that Defender has played in supporting our humanitarian aid and conservation partners over the decades.”

During May 2015, a team of life-long Defender fans were invited to join the Solihull production line in May to help build this one-of-a-kind vehicle, including adventurer Bear Grylls.

Commenting while on the production line, Grylls said: “The Land Rover Defender has been there for me more times than I care to remember. They are so often the unsung heroes of our TV shows, working hard in the toughest conditions to get crew in and out of exceptionally challenging terrains. Known and respected by me and many other adventurers for their rugged reliability – it was an honour to be asked to take part in the build of this very special car.”

Representatives from the IFRC and Born Free also made the journey to Solihull to fit their part to the vehicle, including actress and founder of the Born Free Foundation Virginia McKenna OBE.

The vehicle will be publicly unveiled by Bonhams at Goodwood Festival of Speed, being held 25-28 June. After completing a schedule of public appearances throughout the rest of the year, ‘Defender 2,000,000’ will be auctioned at a prestigious charity event, held at the Bonhams auction house in New Bond Street, London on Wednesday 16 December.

As part of the auction, Bonhams will host a specially curated Series Land Rover and Defender exhibition, to showcase the vehicle’s rich history and detail its journey to becoming a global automotive icon.

Robert Brooks, Bonhams Chairman, said: “Bonhams and Land Rover are quintessentially British brands, and so we are delighted to be auctioning the two-millionth Series Land Rover and Defender on 16 December at our global headquarters in New Bond Street. It’s an honour to offer this landmark vehicle and I’ve no doubt there will be some spirited bidding.”

The ‘Defender 2,000,000’ vehicle features a plethora of distinctive finishing touches. A map of Red Wharf Bay – where the design for the original Land Rover was first drawn in the sand – is engraved into the aluminium fender, which contrasts with the exterior Indus Silver satin paint. A unique ‘no 2,000,000’ badge sits on the rear of the vehicle, which is mirrored on the interior console. The design is finished with Santorini Black wheels and wheel arches, roof, door hinges, grille and mirror caps.

Inside, the leather seats also feature the ‘Red Wharf Bay’ graphic and ‘no 2,000,000’ logos have been stitched on the headrests. A bespoke aluminium plaque, signed by everyone who helped to assemble the vehicle is fitted to the driver’s seat plinth. On the front and rear, S90 HUE registration plates – a reference to the first ever pre-production Land Rover, registration ‘HUE 166’ – complete this one-of-a-kind Land Rover Defender.

Production of the original Land Rover Series I began at the famous Lode Lane facility in 1947 ahead of its launch at the Amsterdam Motor Show on 30 April 1948. Since then two million examples of the Series I, II III and Defender have been produced at Solihull.

IN THE NEWS: Land Rover Introduces 2015 Discovery Sport Premium Compact SUV

(MAHWAH, N.J.) – September 2, 2014 – Land Rover today revealed the new Discovery Sport, a versatile premium compact SUV that is the first member of the new Discovery vehicle family. A dynamic design with a compact footprint provides seven-passenger seating in a “5+2” configuration. The 2015 Discovery Sport will deliver a highly refined combination of performance, safety and efficiency thanks to a body shell of high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum, a 240hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.

New Land Rover innovations debut in the Discovery Sport, including available Autonomous Emergency Braking2 and a new touchscreen infotainment system3.

“The launch of Discovery Sport is a pivotal moment in the 66-year history of Land Rover,” said Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover Group Marketing Director. “Not only does it mark the introduction of the first new member of our expanding Discovery family, it also brings the versatility of 5+2 seating to the compact premium SUV market.”

Designed and engineered at the Land Rover Development Center in the UK, the Discovery Sport will be produced at the company’s award-winning manufacturing facility in Halewood, Liverpool, in the United Kingdom. It goes on sale in early 2015 alongside the existing seven-seat Land Rover LR4 in the US, which is sold as the Discovery in over 170 markets worldwide.

DESIGN

The progressive design of the Discovery Sport sets the tone for a new generation of Land Rover Discovery premium SUVs. A dynamic, emotional design sets the Discovery Sport apart from luxury competitors, yet this new model also offers greater versatility than other premium compact SUVs. Its seven-seat capability and elegantly integrated storage areas make the Discovery Sport an ideal family vehicle. High-quality materials and finishes typical of Land Rover also distinguish the driving experience.

Roomy Interior, Compact Footprint

Some compact SUVs go for visual impact. Others prioritize space usage and versatility. The new Land Rover Discovery Sport combines the two and also offers the brand’s renowned all-terrain capability, with the ability to scale a 45-degree incline.

Built on a 107.9-inch (2,741mm) wheelbase for ride smoothness and generous middle-row legroom, the Discovery Sport nevertheless could take a “compacts only” parking space with its 180.7-inch. (4.59 mm) overall length. The vehicle’s proportions put the wheels out at the corners, contributing to both a low center of gravity and a “planted” stance.

Aside from the overall shape, details including a clamshell hood and distinctive two-bar grille with hexagonal mesh connect it to its’ Land Rover identity. Large outboard air intakes and LED fog lamps in the front bumper convey a strong sense of “sport,” while the slim, wraparound headlamps are reminiscent of designs used on Range Rover vehicles. Round daytime-running lights (DRLs) are punctuated at four equal intervals to represent the points of a compass, a nod to the vehicle’s considerable capabilities.

Halogen headlamps and DRLs will be standard, and available trim upgrades will include Xenon headlamps and LEDs (light emitting diodes) for the DRLs. The tail lamp design echoes the headlamps’ slim, wraparound design, accentuating the dynamic bodylines.

A pronounced step from the rear edge of the hood into the rising beltline, combined with a roofline that tapers subtly downward toward the rear, creates a dramatic profile and sense of motion. The C-pillar rakes dramatically forward toward the gloss-black window surrounds, allowing for an optional contrast roof design.

A new blade-like interpretation of the signature Land Rover fender vents sweeps into a dynamic bodyline that continues to the rear of the vehicle. The robust wheel-arch moldings pay homage to Land Rover heritage.

With the design comes function, too, especially with regard to reducing wind noise. An acoustic laminated windshield, along with the vehicle’s aerodynamic details — such as specially shaped A-pillars and door mirrors – help create a hushed cabin. Aerodynamic detailing at the rear helps to reduce road grime or dirt picked up by the body, especially on unpaved roads or in winter driving. Skid plates are functional and create a design element repeated front and rear.

At the rear of the vehicle, the spoiler features inner extensions that improve aerodynamic efficiency. Advanced LED light-pipe technology used for the center high-mount stoplight (CHMSL) uses creates a slender and elegant ribbon of light.

The Discovery Sport will offer a wide palette of exterior color options: Fuji White, Santorini Black, Corris Grey, Indus Silver, Loire Blue, Scotia Grey, Kaikoura Stone, Firenze Red, and a limited edition color, Yulong White.

An available “Black Pack” trim package emphasizes the vehicle’s sporty stance, with gloss-black used for the grille, door mirror caps, front fender vents, and badging. The package also includes a choice of 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels. A contrast roof, available in Santorini Black, extends to the base of the A-pillars.

Five distinctive alloy wheel designs will be available with Silver or Gloss Black finishes.

Premium Interior

The Discovery Sport cabin coddles the driver and passengers in true Land Rover luxury. To create a family-friendly SUV, Land Rover invited a large cross-section of families to the development center and watched as they climbed into a variety of current SUVs and performed tasks, such as accessing third-row seating, syncing electronic devices, installing child seats and placing drink containers in cup holders. The results of the study helped designers shape the cabin design and details.

While prioritizing expanded passenger room in all dimensions, the Land Rover Discovery is still able to provide elevated “stadium seating” for the middle row. Second-row passengers sit two-inches (50mm) higher than front-seat occupants, providing a more open feel. The versatile second row seat, in addition to its 60/40 split seatbacks, includes a recline feature and can slide rearward by up to 6.3- inches. In that position, the seat provides 39.8-inches of legroom. The backs of the front seats are contoured to expand second row knee room. The easily accessed child seat LATCH connectors make it easy to swap child seats between vehicles.

A new multi-link rear suspension reduces rear suspension intrusion beneath the luggage area, and new space-efficient electrical modules and wire routing help to unlock additional cabin room. Those elements proved key in allowing Land Rover to offer seven passenger seating with a 5+2 third row for occasional usage. When the third-row seat is folded, luggage volume equals that of the two-row model. Both the second- and third rows can be folded down using one hand to create a spacious load area. A low luggage compartment floor makes it easy to load and unload large items.

Clean Yet Striking Cabin Design

Designed to accommodate families, the Land Rover Discovery Sport nevertheless caters to the driver. That of course starts with the brand’s traditional raised Sports Command Driving Position – not just a raised seat height, but also a design that positions the seat, pillars and dash to maximize forward visibility. In a theme similar to Range Rover models, the front cabin design uses the strong vertical lines of the center console and the slimmer horizontal elements of the instrument panel to create a striking though elegant appearance. A prominent center console groups all controls logically. Soft-touch rotary controls and buttons set into a gloss-black surround create a tactile user-interface and are easy for the driver to find under the glare of direct sunlight.

A three-spoke, multi-function steering wheel frames an easy-to-read instrument cluster, with twin analog dials set deeply into cylindrical housings to shield them from glare. A 5-inch color TFT display is positioned between the main gauges presents key data such as fuel levels, gear position, coolant temperature and Terrain Response® modes. Paddle shifters allow manual control for the nine-speed automatic transmission.

Upper trim levels feature twin-needle-stitched leather on the upper reaches of the instrument panel and door surfaces, and the center console’s vertical spars are available in a genuine metal finish. Configurable mood lighting, controlled via the central 8-inch touch screen, enhances interior ambience.

All Land Rover Discovery models come standard with leather appointed seating, ranging from grained part-leather on SE models up to luxurious Windsor leather on the range-topping HSE Luxury. Five interior color options include Ebony, Cirrus, Ivory, Almond and Tan.

Convenience at Every Turn

Storage and power points, two features that family buyers demand in a premium SUV, are offered in abundance in the new Discovery Sport. Two center console designs are available, depending on the model grade. The standard console provides space for two cups along with a separate roller storage section. Upper trim levels include a sliding armrest and a roller-style cover for the storage bin, featuring removable cup holders. The space can be reconfigured quickly to securely hold a two-liter bottle.

The front and rear door panels offer ample storage space, as well. Third-row passengers have a storage area, and luggage compartment rails are available for the cargo area.

With even the youngest passengers climbing onboard with a smartphone, iPod or other electronic devices, Land Rover has equipped the new Discovery Sport with up to four 12V power points. Three-row models can have as many as six USB charging sockets, allowing multiple electronic devices to be recharged simultaneously.

Cooling Effect

The standard dual-zone electronic climate control system offers a bonus for rear-seat passengers: air vents that are mounted mid-way up the B-pillar for more effective air distribution. In contrast, some vehicles place rear seat vents at the back of the center console, which reduces legroom for the middle passenger. On models with third-row seating, the climate control adds an independent fan speed control. The third-row air vents are positioned mid-way up the C-pillar.

The climate control automatically detects windshield misting and activates the defogger, and an air-quality sensor switches to recirculation mode should high pollution levels be detected. A driver-selectable ECO mode optimizes the air-conditioning system and automatic transmission for maximum fuel efficiency.

Personalization

The Land Rover Discovery Sport will offer a comprehensive range of personalization options, including:

• Black Pack: a gloss-black grille, door mirror caps, front fender vents, hood and tailgate lettering and a choice of 19- or 20-inch alloy wheel designs

• Contrast roof in Santorini Black or Corris Grey that extends to the base of the A-pillars

• A range of seven distinctive alloy wheel designs – including the striking Aero Viper – is available with a selection of Silver or Gloss Black finish, depending on wheel design

• Front and rear undershields, together with tubular stainless-steel side steps with a highly polished finish, underscore the vehicle’s all-terrain capability. Noble-silver painted door-mirror caps complement the look

• A full panoramic roof with a dark tint and a special surface treatment for solar protection makes the cabin feel even more spacious. A power-retracting shade offers additional sun shielding

• Available accessory luggage compartment rails create a highly configurable luggage area, and can be specified in conjunction with a Retention Kit featuring a telescopic crossbeam and retractable band to secure loose items

LAND ROVER ENGINEERING

At the core of the new Land Rover Discovery Sport is the outstanding capability that’s been the hallmark of the company’s vehicles for nearly half a century. As it has done with all its models, Land Rover instilled the Discovery Sport with a compelling combination of off-road capability and on-road dynamics. Interior packaging and safety innovations make the new model an ideal family vehicle, while extensive use of intelligent lightweight materials and an efficient powertrain reduce fuel costs and environmental impact.

Lightweight Unibody with Multi-link Rear Suspension

The Land Rover Discovery Sport body shell uses a combination of high-strength steel, ultra high-strength boron steel and lightweight aluminum. Hot-stamped boron steel is used in key parts of the crash safety cell, including the A- and B-pillars, enabling them to have a slim design for excellent visibility.

The hood, front fenders, roof and tailgate are aluminum. Using the lightweight material at the vehicle’s extremes, far from the center of gravity, contributes to enhanced agility.

The new platform shares some front end architecture and components with the award-winning Range Rover Evoque, including a magnesium crossbeam for high torsional rigidity and reduced weight.

Front suspension uses steel lower control arms and aluminum suspension knuckles. Hydraulic rebound stops in the suspension struts significantly reduce noise entering the cabin when the suspension rebounds after encountering a pothole or obstacle.

The compact multi-link rear suspension, which uses some aluminum components for reduced weight, offers numerous benefits, including on-road agility, quiet ride, long wheel travel and maximized cabin room. At 13.4 -inches (340mm), wheel articulation is excellent. Because the suspension mounting points make only a minimal intrusion into the luggage area, second-row seating can slide and recline past the mounting points for maximum legroom.

The lower control arm and rear suspension knuckle are produced from thin-walled hollow aluminum castings, an innovative lightweight solution that also increases strength. The rear suspension is mounted on a light and stiff steel subframe, which promotes excellent steering response and interior quietness.

Turbocharged Power and Efficiency

The new Land Rover Discovery gets its efficient power from the same turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine as the Range Rover Evoque. A nine-speed automatic transmission and Haldex All-Wheel Drive are both standard, for confident on-road handling and all-terrain capability.

The 2.0-liter gasoline engine features an advanced low-inertia turbocharger, high-pressure direct fuel injection and variable valve timing to deliver exceptional driveability throughout the rev range. Twin balancer shafts ensure high levels of refinement. Smart regenerative charging prioritizes charging the battery while the vehicle is decelerating, reducing the electrical system’s demands on the engine.

Producing 240hp at 5,500rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,750 RPM, the all-alloy engine offers excellent performance and flexibility from a light, compact package. Specially treated piston rings and tappets minimize friction for optimal efficiency, and a sheet-metal exhaust manifold helps to warm up the engine quickly to reduce emissions during short drives.

Nine-speed Automatic Transmission

The ZF 9HP48 nine-speed automatic transmission, also featured in the Range Rover Evoque, uses closely spaced gear ratios to provide seamless response and allow for a very low first gear and powerful mid-range acceleration. Second gear, which is approximately equivalent to first gear in transmissions with fewer ratios, is used to start off from a standstill to maximize efficiency and refinement. Drivers can, however, manually select first gear when maximum acceleration is required or for a low ratio in challenging off-road situations. A rotary gearshift controller rises silently from the center console when the engine is started. Steering wheel paddle shifters offer complete driver control for dynamic driving, precision off-road maneuvers and manual gear selection while towing.

The transmission’s quick gear changes are smooth, in keeping with the brand’s penchant for refinement. A skip-shift function allows the transmission to downshift directly between non-consecutive gears rather than sequentially cycling through gears in between. Should the driver demand too low a gear, the transmission will remember the request and select the gear once engine speed slows to an appropriate level.

An adaptive-shifting system matches the transmission’s responses to the driver’s inputs. For example, it selects higher gears more quickly and holds them for longer periods during relaxed driving, and it responds to a more dynamic driving style by holding lower ratios for longer and downshifting more quickly

Dual Personality: Equally Capable On- and Off-Road

The new Discovery Sport delivers on the promise of outstanding on-road refinement, comfort and handling in concert with all-terrain capability that’s essential to the brand’s DNA. Exhaustive tests on everything from British country roads to the Nürburgring Nordschleife ensured the on-road refinement Land Rover customers expect, while a punishing off-road test regimen prepared the Discovery Sport for off-pavement travel.

With all-wheel-drive traction and long-travel suspension for excellent articulation, the Discovery Sport provides impressive all-terrain performance. The body has been designed to cope with challenging off-road terrain, with 8.3-inches (212mm) of ground clearance and approach, departure and breakover angles of 25, 31 and 21 degrees, respectively. The Discovery Sport can scale gradients of up to 45 degrees. In extreme situations, lower trim on the front bumper can be removed to increase the approach angle.

Off-road driving, or driving in inclement weather, can often involve water along the way. That is why Land Rover positioned the vehicle’s air intake high above the wheel arch to prevent water entry into the engine. A rigorous testing procedure ensured watertight sealing for all doors.

Another particularly demanding part of the testing process examined the ability of the vehicle to drive away from a waterlogged condition. During this extreme torture test, the Discovery Sport is parked in standing water, the watertight doors are opened, and the interior is intentionally flooded. After 30 minutes in the water, Land Rover tests the ability for the vehicle to restart and drive.

All-Wheel Drive, Terrain Response® and a Suite of Off-Road Technologies2

The intelligent full-time all-wheel-drive system continuously varies the torque split front-to-rear to deliver outstanding performance and traction on all surfaces. The latest electronically controlled Haldex center coupling can respond to wheel slip and driver demands faster than a purely mechanical coupling. Land Rover Terrain Response® maximizes the capability of the Discovery Sport in challenging conditions. Controlled through an intuitive interface on the center console, Terrain Response® is designed to precisely tailor the vehicle’s steering, throttle response, gearbox, center-coupling and braking and stability systems to the demands of the terrain. Terrain Response® features four settings: General; Grass/Gravel/Snow (for slippery conditions on- and off-road); Mud and Ruts, and Sand2.

Terrain Response® is backed up by a suite of technologies that support off-road and slippery-condition driving. These include:

• Hill Descent Control® (HDC) maintains a set speed while negotiating steep inclines off-road2

• Gradient Release Control® (GRC) progressively releases the brakes when moving away on an incline for maximum control2

• Roll Stability Control (RSC) designed to detect the onset of a rollover and applies the brakes to the outer wheels to bring the vehicle under control2

• Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) corrects oversteer and understeer by reducing engine torque and/or applying brakes to individual wheels2

• Electronic Traction Control (ETC) reduces torque and/or applies a braking force to individual wheels to prevent wheelspin2

• Engine Drag Torque Control (EDC) helps to prevent lock-up under heavy engine braking in slippery conditions by increasing engine torque to the affected wheels2

Agility That Earns the “Sport” Title

A lightweight bodyshell with high torsional rigidity, along with a long wheelbase and a squat, muscular stance, provide an ideal foundation for crisp steering response, supple ride comfort and sporty agility for the new Land Rover Discovery Sport. Long-travel suspension mounts to extremely stiff isolated subframes, with large-diameter gas damper struts at the front and all-new multi-link suspension at the rear. Body roll is well contained, and a high level of suspension compliance ensures the tires’ contact patches remain in touch with rough road surfaces.

Electric Power Steering

The electric power-assisted steering system (EPAS) has been tuned for excellent driver feedback on the road, and the steering rack is solidly mounted to the front subframe to enhance precision. Variable-ratio steering uses a slower ratio around the center position for improved precision at speed, and a faster ratio when additional steering lock is applied to increase agility on winding roads. The transition from a slower to faster ratio is linear and seamless; the driver is simply aware of a highly responsive steering system.

The steering is light and responsive with additional power assistance at lower speeds for enhanced maneuverability, but firmer and with less assistance at higher speeds.

EPAS removes the need for engine-driven hydraulic steering assistance, reducing parasitic losses and therefore fuel consumption. As an added benefit, EPAS enables the available Park Assist feature, which helps to identify suitable parallel and perpendicular parking spaces and can automatically steer the vehicle into place2.

Advanced Braking Technology

The Discovery Sport is equipped with vented 12.8-inch (325mm) front and 11.8-inch (300mm) rear disc brakes, providing reassuring stopping power. The front brakes are of a new design, with a stiffer caliper and new-generation pads to enhance braking, improve feel and reduce brake dust.

Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) is designed to automatically increase the amount of brake pressure when the system senses an emergency situation; Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) helps to ensure the ideal braking balance between the front and rear wheels in extreme situations, and Corner Brake Control (CBC) helps to ensure stability during heavy braking in a corner2.

An available Autonomous Emergency Braking system can help avoid collisions or mitigate their consequences. The system uses stereo cameras mounted next to the rear-view mirror designed to detect objects that could pose the risk of a collision, such as slowing traffic. Operational between speeds of 3-50 mph (5-80km/h), the system helps to avoid collisions below 32 mph (50km/h), and reduces the severity of an impact at speeds below 50 mph (80km/h). If the system deems a collision likely, it will alert the driver with a visual and audible warning. If the driver takes no action and a collision is judged unavoidable, a driver warning is triggered while the system applies full braking pressure to bring the vehicle to a stop2.

Driver-assistance systems

• Optional Park Assist identifies suitable parallel and perpendicular parking spaces, allowing the driver to operate the accelerator, brake and transmission while the vehicle autonomously steers on both entry to and – in the case of parallel parking spaces – exit from the space. Parking sensors offer additional assistance2

• Optional Lane Departure Warning is designed to gently vibrate the steering wheel to warn a driver who may be unintentionally drifting out of a lane2

• Optional Traffic Sign Recognition is designed to monitor road signs and displays a reminder of the speed limit or overtaking regulations on the navigation screen2

• Standard Trailer Stability Assist detects trailer instability and brakes individual wheels to help the driver correct a potentially hazardous situation2

• Standard Tow Assist and Tow Hitch Assist use a camera system to help the driver hitch a trailer and predict its path while reversing2

• Standard automatic headlamps and rain-sensitive wipers activate autonomously according to conditions

Airbags

The Land Rover Discovery brings the brand’s best active and passive safety ideas together. The comprehensive occupant safety package includes driver and passenger front airbags, knee airbags, side curtain airbags and thorax airbags4.

Exhaustive Testing

Land Rover tested 200 Discovery Sport prototypes over a combined total of 6,800 weeks to ensure exceptional levels of reliability, off-road capability and on-road dynamics. A testing regime that spanned the globe encompassed extremes of altitude, temperature and terrain. Thousands of hours have been invested in tackling the challenging Big Red sand dunes in Dubai, driving through deep snow and over icy lakes in Sweden, and traversing the deep mud and clay and steep inclines of the Land Rover Eastnor Castle off-road facility in the UK. Other test locations included the US, Spain, Morocco, Germany, and Austria.

Advanced Infotainment and Connectivity3

An all-new infotainment system for the Discovery Sport integrates voice-controlled satellite-navigation, WiFi hotspot connectivity and an all-terrain mode. Buyers can opt for the Land Rover InControl™ technology, including InControl Apps™ that bring the convenience and original look and feel of smartphone apps to the vehicle’s 8-inch touchscreen3.

The standard infotainment system uses an 8-inch touchscreen display with 800×480 pixel resolution for an easy and intuitive user experience. The driver can monitor and control a wide range of functions by using drag, scroll or swipe gestures, similar to a smartphone.

The Discovery Sport will offer the choice of two audio systems: a 10-speaker system and an 11-speaker upgrade version (including subwoofer). Bluetooth® functionality allows up to two phones to be synced to the infotainment system simultaneously: one to make or receive hands-free phone calls via multi-function steering wheel controls, the other to play audio, including streamed music from app-based services such as Spotify. Alternatively, smartphones and portable MP3 players can be synced and charged via USB sockets or auxiliary inputs.

The home screen provides easy access to audio, climate, telephone and navigation functions, while users can swipe to an additional two screens to access a range of other functions. These include WiFi hotspots, 4x4i and off-road displays, Eco Data and ambient lighting control.

Satellite navigation is standard and features advanced 3D city models and landmarks, high-quality 2D maps and 3D views of upcoming junctions. An intuitive interface allows occupants to quickly enter a postal code or full address as required. Alternatively, one-shot voice destination entry can be used, letting the driver enter a destination just by speaking its name. Voice commands can also be used to select radio stations, dial phone numbers or to access stored contacts from the phonebook.

Land Rover InControl® Apps

Land Rover InControl® Apps, developed in conjunction with BOSCH SoftTec, offer a wide range of connectivity functions and are compatible with the latest Apple® and Android™ smartphones. By connecting a smartphone to the dedicated USB port, smartphone apps optimized for in-vehicle use will function on the vehicle’s touchscreen, retaining their original look and feel3. The latest content becomes available every time the apps update.

A productivity suite enables easy access to the connected smartphone’s contacts, calendar and music library, while a Maps app includes maps and satellite views overlaid with the vehicle location.

Land Rover and BOSCH SoftTec worked together with some of the world’s leading smartphone app developers to create apps ideally suited for in-car use, such as navigation, music streaming, Internet radio and location services. Compatible apps include iHeartRadio, Stitcher, Glympse, Sygic, Parkopedia, Hotelseeker, Cityseeker, Eventseeker, Airmotion News, Winston and MobileDay. The selection is being continually expanded.

Owners download the Land Rover InControl® Apps application to their smartphones from either the Apple App Store™ (for iPhone 5/5S/5C and up) or Google Play™ (Android). Once the phone is connected to the vehicle’s dedicated USB port, the owner simply taps the InControl Apps™ icon on the central touchscreen and selects the desired app from the menu.

InControl Remote and Protect™

InControl Remote and Protect™ allows owners to request roadside assistance or emergency services, while an SOS signal is triggered automatically should the airbags be deployed in an accident. The InControl Remote and Protect™ smartphone application allows owners to prepare for a trip by checking fuel levels and range remotely, find their vehicle in a crowded parking lot, and check if doors or windows were left open. Owners can also download trip details to assist in tracking business mileage expenses.

IN THE NEWS: Land Rover Launches High-Performance SVR Brand with 550-hp Range Rover Sport SVR

(MAHWAH, N.J.) – August 10, 2014 – Capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds with an electronically limited top track speed of 162 mph1, the Range Rover Sport SVR will be the first Land Rover vehicle to wear the new high-performance SVR badge.

The SVR features a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine which has been developed to produce 550hp and 502lb-ft of torque – a 40hp and 41lb-ft increase over the standard supercharged V8 – while its advanced ZF® 8HP70 eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive chassis have been tuned to complement the astonishing performance.

Showcasing an electronically controlled two-stage active exhaust, the SVR produces an inspired soundtrack at higher engine speeds while maintaining refinement during steady-state driving. Emphasizing all-terrain capability, vehicles are equipped with 21-inch alloy wheels with 275/45 R21 all-season Continental Cross Contact tires.

The exterior design of the SVR makes a visual impact, while functionally boosting cooling and aerodynamic efficiencies. Similarly, a modified interior featuring sport seats provides visual differentiation and offers increased support during spirited driving.

The Range Rover Sport SVR – designed, engineered and built in Britain – amplifies the engineering integrity, robustness and attention to detail that are Land Rover hallmarks. The Range Rover Sport was introduced in 2005, with over 500,000 vehicles built to date.  The Range Rover Sport SVR builds on the success of the Range Rover Sport. Its all-aluminum unibody reduces weight by 39 percent compared with its predecessor and provides a strong, stiff and lightweight structure on which to create the Range Rover Sport SVR. The Range Rover Sport SVR was created by the Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations team and will be built alongside existing models and sold through the Land Rover retailer network.

Section 1 – THE MOST POWERFUL LAND ROVER VEHICLE EVER

The heart of the Range Rover Sport SVR is an evolution of the JLR all-aluminum 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine. With cast-iron cylinder liners and cross-bolted main bearing caps, this engine features a combination of strength, performance and refinement.

To increase performance, engineers at Special Vehicle Operations have tuned the Bosch management system and increased maximum supercharger boost pressure resulting in power and torque increases of 40hp and 41lb-ft respectively. Producing 550hp and 502lb-ft of torque, the SVR boasts a 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds and an electronically limited top track speed of 162 mph1.

The Range Rover Sport SVR design enhancements include larger air intakes in the front bumper to increase airflow to two intercoolers that reduce the temperature of pressurized air from the supercharger before it enters the engine.

In Dynamic mode, sport driving characteristics are intensified thanks to sharper throttle response and more incisive gearshift logic2. In addition, the fuel supply is controlled on deceleration, creating a characterful crackle through the exhaust.

The engine’s advanced and highly efficient design characteristics include: low internal friction; high-pressure direct injection with a centrally mounted, multi-hole, spray-guided injection system; dual independent variable camshaft timing (VCT); and an advanced intelligent Stop/Start system that stops the engine instead of idling and instantly restarts it when the driver is read to proceed.

Section 2 – DYNAMICALLY FOCUSED DRIVELINE

The smooth and responsive eight-speed ZF® 8HP70 automatic transmission has been retuned for the available performance. With a sure-footed four-wheel-drive system, the transmission receives additional torque in its lower gears to achieve a thrilling 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds1.

Equipped with eight close ratios, shift times have been reduced by up to 50 percent through the implementation of rapid and precise fuel cut-offs during upshifts. This leads to shorter, more visceral and audibly crisper shifts while utilizing engine inertia for a sense of acceleration through the shift. It also creates a more immediate connection to the vehicle, and ensures the engine is constantly within its power band.

The transmission’s adaptive shift strategy monitors acceleration and brake inputs, lateral cornering forces, kickdown requests and even the severity of gradients, before choosing one of 25 pre-determined programs to seamlessly adapt to driver behavior and road conditions. Sportier driving triggers more aggressive gearshifts and defers upshifts.

To improve dynamic stability, the throttle is automatically blipped during high-speed downshifts, smoothing the transition between ratios. This function also allows the transmission to perform a series of rapid downshifts under hard braking with maximum refinement and control. Corner Recognition maintains one gear through a turn to improve stability while also ensuring a keen response once the bend straightens and the driver can accelerate. Similarly, the transmission recognizes a series of overtaking maneuvers and maintains a lower gear to ensure instant acceleration2.

Despite this performance focus, there is no impact on refinement: the ZF eight-speed transmission’s torque converter operates for smooth take off in first gear, but is bypassed by a locking clutch from second gear. This creates a direct link between the transmission and the driven wheels.

The transmission is controlled via either steering wheel-mounted paddle shift controls, or the gear lever. Drivers can default to full automatic mode, make occasional manual interventions, or push the gear lever to the left to gain manual control. In manual mode, gear shifts are made via the paddle shift controls, or by pushing the gear lever forwards for downshifts and pulling back for upshifts, echoing the shift logic of racing cars. In Dynamic mode, the shift strategy will not upshift at redline and will only downshift to prevent engine speeds below idle speed2.

The Range Rover Sport SVR has been engineered to deliver an incredible breadth of capability. The SVR is fitted with permanent four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case, with a low-range option for demanding terrain, and a 50/50 percent torque split front-to-rear.

Optimum traction is maintained with the aid of an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the center differential, which distributes torque between the front and rear axles – up to 100 percent can be channeled to either axle in extreme conditions. Sophisticated electronic traction-control systems further contribute to capability.

The transfer case offers selectable low- and high-range, using a two-speed fully synchronized shift on the move’ system which allows the driver to change between the two at up to 37 mph for exceptional flexibility. High-range provides a direct drive ratio of 1:1, while the low-range ratio is 2.93:1, providing an extremely low crawl speed. This allows for an overall crawl ratio of 45.542:1.

To optimize traction and stability, the Dynamic Active Rear Locking Differential has been recalibrated. The differential now locks earlier and to an increased extent, satisfying performance-minded drivers and ensuring torque is transferred to the rear wheel with most traction, increasing agility2.

Torque Vectoring is also uniquely recalibrated. It uses the car’s brake system to create the effect of a torque-vectoring differential, constantly balancing the distribution of engine torque between the four wheels during cornering, for improved grip and steering, and reduced understeer2.

The system monitors the vehicle 100 times per second via the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) module.  As the car accelerates through a corner, the system uses yaw sensors to detect the beginning of understeer.  Imperceptible levels of braking are then used to correct the vehicle attitude, while engine torque is transferred to the outside wheels, which have more grip, thus maintaining traction and steering control2.

Section 3 – LEADING-EDGE DESIGN

The exterior design and luxurious interior of Land Rover’s premium sports SUV have been enhanced for the Range Rover Sport SVR with a range of dynamic improvements.

Designed exclusively by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), the Range Rover Sport SVR makes a strong visual statement. These include a front bumper with muscular trapezoidal air intakes, dark Range Rover script on the clamshell hood, which also features revised vents, and a new grille in a dark finish that contrasts with the headlights’ LED signature lighting. At the side of the vehicle, an all-new fender incorporates a distinctively designed vent, while unique side moldings add muscularity. At the rear, prominent Range Rover Sport SVR badging and a pronounced high-level spoiler with a centrally mounted brake light signal the vehicle’s sporting intent. The unique rear bumper features a gloss black diffuser, which incorporates unique quad exhaust pipes, instantly differentiating this high-performance derivative.

The larger air intakes in the front bumper create additional airflow for the charge air coolers that channel air to the powerful 550hp supercharged engine.

The new rear spoiler reduces lift, and has been carefully balanced with the new front bumper.  Beneath the front bumper a new NVH comb is fitted, which reduces wind noise and improves aerodynamic efficiency.  It also reduces front-end lift to help the front tires retain high levels of grip during enthusiastic driving. The deeper front bumper’s more aggressive lower section can also be removed for extreme off-roading.

Additional brake cooling has also been introduced for the six-piston Brembo brake set-up, ensuring optimal stopping power.

A choice of seven color palettes are available, including the striking Estoril Blue, exclusive to the Range Rover Sport SVR. Exterior trim detailed in Black and headlights with black casings round-off the design enhancements, creating a visually imposing road presence.

Inside, Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations has differentiated the SVR with distinctive leather sports seats. These comfortable seats offer additional lateral support during spirited driving. Full 14-way electric adjustment is offered and the vehicle’s Sports Command Driving Position2 and generous rear legroom are unaffected.

The sporting theme continues with the rear seats, which have been redesigned to echo the performance-oriented front seats. The result is an eye-catching four-seat aesthetic, with space for an occasional fifth passenger. The new rear seats recline for maximum comfort and offer full 60/40 folding capability and up to 62.2 cubic feet (1761 liters) of load space.

The seats are finished in luxurious Oxford leather with ribbed, quilted centers, Ebony Black top stitching, eye-catching reflective piping, and all feature the Range Rover Sport SVR logo. Four striking interior color options are available: Ebony Black; Ebony Black and Cirrus White; Ebony Black and Pimento Red; Ebony Black and Tan.

As standard, the vehicle is supplied with turned aluminum interior trim details, with optional carbon fiber trim for the door panels, center console, dashboard and steering-wheel bezel available.

Section 4 – EXHILARATING SOUND TRACK

Differentiated by quad exhaust pipes, the Range Rover Sport SVR is equipped with a two-stage active exhaust featuring electronically controlled valves that optimize sound quality, performance and aesthetics. The new exhaust features larger diameter underfloor pipes – up from 2.2-inches (55mm) in the Supercharged V8 to 2.4-inches (60mm) – for enhanced flow characteristics.

A new exhaust soundtrack audibly distinguishes the Range Rover Sport SVR, with a purposeful modulation at lighter throttle openings and a higher-frequency staccato at peak performance. The electronically controlled active exhaust valves largely eliminate exhaust flow noise, creating pure engine sound through to peak engine speeds. At lower engine speeds, the electronically controlled valves close off two tailpipes. As engine speed and load increases – typically around 3000rpm – the valves open, allowing greater flow through all four exhaust pipes. A symposer enriches sound quality filtering desirable induction noise into the cabin.

Together with modified engine tuning that cuts the air charge far more quickly when the driver lifts off the throttle, the new exhaust also creates a pronounced crackle during deceleration. If desired, the driver can also select a quiet mode at any engine speed. The new active exhaust system has also been designed to maintain the outstanding off-road performance of the Range Rover Sport SVR should owners decide to use its 33.5-inch (850mm) wading capability2.

Section 5 – HANDLING THAT EXCITES

The Range Rover Sport has been praised for its high levels of comfort and extremely agile handling. The SVR takes that capability to the next level courtesy of extensive development on British country roads, German autobahns and the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Enhanced suspension and steering

The Range Rover Sport SVR chassis has been tuned for enhanced agility. Constructed mainly from lightweight aluminum components, the suspension is fully independent and double-isolated, with wide-spaced double wishbones at the front and an advanced multi-link layout at the rear. A cross-linked, four-corner air suspension and Adaptive Dynamics with continuously variable magnetorheological dampers is featured in the SVR. Adaptive Dynamics active damping monitors vehicle movements at least 500 times a second, adjusting the damping force almost instantaneously in response to changing road-surface conditions and driver inputs2.

The air springs feature a modified piston profile for sportier handling and composure, while the Adaptive Dynamics damper settings have been tuned for increased agility. Rear suspension subframe bushings, upgraded by 20 percent, ensure a connected response to driver inputs.

While offering a level of performance normally associated with performance cars, the vehicle’s high levels of comfort and off-road capability have not been sacrificed: the ride quality retains its compliance and the ride height is unaltered, with an adjustable range from 2 inches (50mm) in access mode up to 9.3-inches (235mm) for off-roading. Wheel travel also remains identical, with 10.2-inches of movement at the front and 10.7-inches (272mm) at the rear. Wading depth continues to be 33.5-inches (850mm). Six Terrain Response® 2 settings continue to be available: General, Dynamic, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. Alternatively, the “Auto” setting intelligently selects the most appropriate mode2.

The revised Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) system featuring variable-ratio, speed-sensitive assistance, with added weighting for a more immediate and connected feel at speed. Unlike hydraulically assisted power-steering systems, EPAS does not rely on an engine-driven pump, reducing fuel consumption and emissions2.

All vehicles will be equipped with Range Rover Sport SVR-specific 21-inch alloys and all-season 275/45 R21 tires.

Active-Roll Control tuned for flatter, faster cornering

Working in conjunction with air springs and Active Dynamics continuously variable dampers, the two-channel Active-Roll Control (ARC) enhances high-performance capability. Replacing traditional anti-roll bars, ARC employs actuators powered by a hydraulic pump to keep body roll in check, adapting to body accelerations up to 1000 times a second. Compared with earlier iterations with a single actuator, ARC uses two actuators to respond independently to lateral roll at each axle, providing greater precision. When the system senses vehicle roll, ARC applies an opposing torque, keeping the body level and composed. ARC allows the Range Rover Sport SVR to corner flatter and faster. Dynamic mode further reduces body roll for maximum handling capability2.

While ARC is tuned to behave uniquely for the Range Rover Sport SVR during performance driving, it uses the same software map as other Range Rover Sport models when off-road use is detected by on-board sensors. This maintains excellent off-road capability.

Section 6 – DEVELOPED AT THE NÜRBURGRING

With 13 miles (20.8km) of challenging twists and turns, high-speed straights, daunting crests and compressions, the Nordschleife is the ultimate test for any performance car. The SVR was subject to exhaustive testing, with prototype vehicles completing nearly 1000 laps around the legendary circuit. During testing and development, the SVR recorded a Nordschleife lap time of just 8 minutes 14 seconds. The SVR made its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, powering up the 1.16-mile course to great fanfare from the motorsports community.

Developed alongside the highly-acclaimed all-new Range Rover, the new Range Rover Sport now delivers the brand’s best-ever on-road dynamics together with class-leading, genuine Land Rover all-terrain capability. The new, technology-packed, Range Rover Sport, presents customers with a more assertive and muscular exterior, more luxurious interior and the flexibility provided by the option of occasional 5+2 seating.

Design: assertive, powerful and muscular

The dynamic new Range Rover Sport has a bold and progressive exterior design that is assertive, powerful and muscular, hinting at the improved driving performance, and positioning the vehicle clearly between the Range Rover and the Evoque through a clear, shared design DNA.

With a fresh interpretation of the previous model’s distinctive design, the new vehicle has a sleek and contemporary appearance combined with enhanced use of space.  The new Sport is just 62mm longer than its predecessor, yet at 4850mm, it is shorter than other 7-seater SUVs and most E segment sedans, bringing greater manoeuvrability and ease of parking. However, a significantly longer wheelbase (increased by 178mm) provides greater room and improved access for rear passengers.

Shorter overhangs at the front and rear, plus additional width (+55mm) give the new vehicle a more modern stance.

With its ‘faster’ windscreen angle, streamlined and rounded profile and lower, dynamic sloping roofline, the new Range Rover Sport is 8 percent more aerodynamic than the outgoing vehicle (Cd 0.34).  The new Sport is 149mm shorter and 55mm lower than the all-new Range Rover on which it is based and model-for-model weighs 45kg less.

While it was developed alongside the Range Rover and shares some commonality with its sister vehicle, the all-new Range Rover Sport benefits from 75 percent unique parts, a significant number of which directly influence the way the new Sport looks and feels.

To maximise personalisation, customers will be offered a choice of wheel designs ranging through 19-, 20-, 21- and 22-inches in diameter including the iconic “Viper’s Nest” wheel design, now available for the first time across all Range Rover models.

Capability: the broadest range of abilities in an SUV

The new Range Rover Sport has been engineered to deliver dramatically improved on-road driving dynamics, with more connected and agile handling complemented by enhanced ride and refinement.  The lightweight aluminium suspension is fully-independent, with wide-spaced double-wishbones at the front and an advanced multi-link layout at the rear.

Wheel-travel is class-leading (260mm front and 272mm rear) and provides exceptional wheel articulation of 546mm to deal with the toughest conditions.  Maximum ground clearance is increased to 278mm (+51mm) and the upgraded air suspension system automatically varies between two ride heights, while the next generation ground-breaking Terrain Response® 2 system automatically selects the most suitable terrain programme.

Fifth generation air suspension provides up to 115mm of regular movement, from the lowest setting ‘access height’ (now 10mm lower at 50mm for easier entry and exit) to the standard off-road height.  An automatic extension, triggered by sensors, and a manually-selected extension, both raise the Sport by 35mm, giving a total movement range of 185mm.

The re-engineered air suspension system with its new +35mm intermediate setting means that the off-road mode can remain available at much higher speeds (80km/h up from 50km/h) than was possible before, which is valuable in terrain with long, rutted dirt roads.

All-new, the electric power steering is characterised by a lighter, more direct steering feel.  A choice of two full-time 4WD systems will be offered.  One system provides a two-speed transfer case with low-range option, for the most demanding off-road conditions with a front-rear 50/50 percent default torque split, and 100 percent locking capability.

The alternative system is 18kg lighter and features a single-speed transfer case with a Torsen differential, which automatically distributes torque to the axle with most grip, working together with the traction control systems to deliver excellent traction in all conditions. The default front-rear torque split of 42/58 percent is designed to provide a rear-wheel drive bias for optimum driving dynamics.

Powertrains: two engine choices from launch, with new Hybrid and two further diesel engines to follow

At launch, all-new Range Rover Sport customers will have a choice of two engines – a  supercharged 5.0-litre 510PS V8 petrol engine and a 3.0-litre 292PS SDV6 diesel engine.  The powertrain line-up will be expanded in early 2014 by the addition of a 3.0-litre 258PS TDV6 and high performance 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8 diesel engine.  In addition, an innovative, high-efficiency diesel Hybrid model will be available to order in 2014.

Across the range, acceleration times for the 0-60mph dash start from 5 seconds, while fuel consumption is cut by up to 24 percent – depending on model – and CO2 emissions start as low as 194g/km.  All petrol and diesel engines in the new Range Rover Sport are paired with the advanced electronically controlled ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic gearbox.

The weight reduction measures on the new Range Rover Sport open up the future possibility for the fitment of a smaller, lighter power plant, such as a four cylinder engine. A model which could have an overall weight of less than 2000kg, a reduction of over 500kg* from the previous lightest model.

Sustainability: first in class with lightweight aluminium construction

The all-new Range Rover Sport is the first vehicle in its segment to feature an advanced all-aluminium body structure, which not only contributes to outstanding agility and driving dynamics, but also delivers significantly reduced weight and enhanced sustainability.

Engineered in parallel with the highly-acclaimed new Range Rover, the new model’s lightweight aluminium body structure employs a combination of pressed panels, plus cast, extruded and rolled aluminium alloy parts, so the strength is concentrated precisely where the loads are greatest.  The vehicle’s platform is 39 percent lighter than the previous model’s.

In 2014, the new Sport’s improvement in efficiency will be raised to a new level with the introduction of an ultra-efficient diesel Hybrid achieving CO2 emissions of 169g/km.

All models across the range are fitted with an advanced intelligent Stop/Start system which improves fuel consumption by up to 7 percent.

Interior: modern and luxurious with a strong sporting character

The new Sport provides an interior with distinctive Range Rover Sport design cues, superior detailing and craftsmanship.

A design benchmark in its segment, the Sport interior offers a unique blend of style and understated luxury with strong, elegant lines, top quality materials and an extra dash of sporting character.  Strong, architectural forms within the interior have been enhanced by a cleaner, purer surface treatment, beautifully executed with more luxurious soft-touch surfaces in key touch points around the cabin.

The sporting ambience of the interior is also reflected in the smaller diameter, thicker steering wheel, vertical gear shifter, higher centre console, configurable mood lighting and more generous seat bolsters.  The Sports Command Driving Position (CDP) combines the supreme sense of confidence and control offered by the Range Rover, with a more sporting seating position similar to the Evoque.

Interior packaging is optimised to create a more spacious rear cabin with 24mm more knee room, while occupants also benefit from the wider cabin.  New, neatly integrated third row, occasional 5+2 seating can be specified.  These powered seats leave a flat floor with no loss of boot space and are split 50/50.

Technology: customer-focused vehicle and safety features

The new Range Rover Sport has been developed as the ultimate ‘no compromise’ vehicle that will fit perfectly into its customers’ lifestyles.  It has been engineered to incorporate the latest developments in customer-focused vehicle and safety technologies to enhance comfort, confidence and safety behind the wheel.

New or enhanced chassis technologies for the new Sport include Adaptive Dynamics featuring continuously variable dampers (CVD), and on more powerful models, a dedicated Dynamic mode in the Terrain Response® 2 system for enthusiastic on-road driving.  This system is combined with twin-channel Dynamic Response active lean control, a Dynamic Active Rear Locking Differential, and Torque Vectoring by Braking, which transfers torque to the outside wheels during cornering, reducing understeer.

The new Range Rover Sport offers a comprehensive connectivity package enabling customers to stay seamlessly connected to their vehicle, business and family lives. ‘Connected car’ technology allows the driver to check the status of the vehicle via an App installed on their smartphone and also provides support features such as Stolen Vehicle Tracking, Emergency Call and Land Rover Assist Call. Finally, a high bandwidth Wi-Fi Hotspot can be installed in the vehicle so that passengers can use the internet and get the best data connection for their smartphones or tablets.

A new, optional colour Head-Up Display presents key vehicle and navigation data without the driver needing to look away from the road, using laser technology for superior clarity and contrast.

The new model introduces a digital camera system which supports three driver assistance features that help deliver improved driver awareness: Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition and Automatic High Beam Assist.  Another unique innovation on the Sport is the new Wade Sensing™ feature that provides ‘depth’ information when driving through water, made even more beneficial to the driver now that the Sport’s maximum wading depth has increased by 150mm over the previous model to 850mm.

London-based bespoke coachbuilder, Prindiville Design, has unveiled a new Limited Edition Land Rover Defender, designed to celebrate the debut of the model in their Collection which counts some of today’s most sought-after supercars such as the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini Aventador.Restricted to only 25 units worldwide, and designed to offer individuality coupled with a superior level of comfort and practicality, the Limited Edition Land Rover is based on the latest Defender 90 Hard Top model, and hand-assembled by a team of highly skilled engineers at Prindiville’s UK manufacturing facility close to Silverstone, in-line with the customer’s bespoke interior and exterior specification. The two Fiat brands — founded, respectively, by Karl Abarth and Enzo Ferrari — crossed paths more than half a century ago, when Abarth created a one-off spyder body for the 1953 Ferrari 166/250MM series that competed in such road races as the Targa Florio and the Mille Miglia.

Abarth says its new 695 Tributo Ferrari was developed in cooperation with Ferrari’s engineering department and “offers Ferrari customers a small but exciting small car for all their…needs, including practical urban mobility.”

Abarth’s definition of “practical urban mobility” apparently includes a Fiat 1.4 Turbo T-Jet four-cylinder engine tuned to spit out 180 horsepower and mated to an MTA (automated manual transmission) electromechanical gearbox with paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel.

Other performance enhancements include oversize Brembo brakes, stiffer shocks, 17-inch alloy wheels shod with low-profile tires and a Record Monza dual-mode exhaust system with variable backpressure.

The 695 Tributo Ferrari is finished in — what else? — Scuderia Red, with wheels and rear air intakes painted Racing Gray and outside mirrors trimmed in carbon fiber. Xenon headlamps are courtesy of Magneti Marelli.

The cockpit of this customized Fiat features Abarth Corsa by Sabelt seats with carbon-fiber shell and black leather upholstery, a black-leather-trimmed steering wheel with red leather inserts, Jaeger instrumentation, aluminum-covered footwells and racing pedals emblazoned with the Abarth Scorpion logo.
